1. All-university Christmas celebration is this week

The all-university Christmas celebration for students, faculty and staff is Wednesday, Dec. 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the second floor of the AMU. This celebration will have Christmas treats, hot chocolate, festive music and lots of holiday cheer.

2. Cap and gown pick up is tomorrow

Cap and gown pick up for all mid-year commencement graduation candidates is Tuesday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in AMU 227. There is no charge or pre-ordering for pick up.

Undergraduates may keep their cap and gown. Graduates in Law, Health Sciences, Master's Program (MPA and DPT), Graduate School of Management and the Graduate School (master's and doctoral degrees) must return caps, gowns and hoods to representatives of the cap and gown company immediately following the ceremony. Tassels may be retained as a keepsake.

Contact University Special Events at 8-7431 for more information. A student's name, approximate height, degree and college are needed for a friend or relative to pick up caps and gowns for a student who cannot pick up their graduation apparel.

3. Writing Center celebrates 1,000th appointment

The Ott Memorial Writing Center conducted its 1,000th appointment of the semester Monday, Dec. 5.

The center has undergraduate and graduate tutors available to meet with any writer at any stage of the writing process. Writers interested in scheduling an appointment can stop by the center on the second floor of Raynor Library, by calling 8-5542 or by going online. Tutors will be available during the first three days of final exams.

Consultations are also available for faculty and staff considering assigning writing in their courses. For more information, contact Rebecca Nowacek, director of the Ott Memorial Writing Center.

5. Study break dessert reception to be held

The Ethnic Alumni Association is hosting their semi-annual “Study Break” dessert reception for students Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lunda Room. 6. Vacant House Watch available over Christmas holiday

Students living off-campus can register their properties with the Department of Public Safety for Vacant House Watch while they are away from campus during the Christmas holiday. DPS officers will discreetly monitor the property periodically during their routine patrols of the neighborhood.

Students must fill out the Vacant House Watch form and return it to the DPS office in Parking Structure 1, on 16th Street. Students are also encouraged to discontinue mail and newspaper service over extended absences and to activate alarm systems if they are available.

7. Tomorrow is last day for inauguration exhibit

The Libraries’ Department of Archives and Special Collections has prepared an exhibit of selected inaugural greetings and congratulations sent to Father Pilarz on the second floor of the AMU. The exhibit contains certificates, proclamations, the presidential mace and selected photos from the Sept. 22 and 23 inaugural events. The exhibit runs through Tuesday, Dec. 13.

9. Christmas holiday and spring semester parking available

Parking Services will be offering complimentary Christmas holiday parking in either the 16th Street Structure or the Wells Street Structure. Students leaving campus for the holidays and leaving their vehicles behind can arrange for a no-fee permit after their last exam of the semester. Those interested can donate a few non-perishable food items or a small cash donation that will be given to Campus Kitchen in exchange for the permit. Any student who had a 24-hour/overnight permit during the fall semester will not need to reapply, as permits remain valid until Monday, Jan. 16.

Parking permits for the spring term will go on sale online Monday, Dec. 12 as of 9 a.m. Students who purchased fall semester permits will need to reapply, should they want parking for the spring term. Permits applied for by New Year’s Day will be available to be picked up from the parking office beginning Tuesday, Jan. 3. Parking Services office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Permits will not be sold directly out of the parking office until Tuesday, Jan. 17.

10. Funding available for student peacemaking projects

The Center for Peacemaking is offering $200 to $2,000 grants for full-time Marquette students to explore the power of nonviolence. Students are encouraged to develop a proposal in which they will work independently or with existing peacemaking and/or development organizations and submit the proposals by Friday, Feb. 17.

11. Registration open for Dissertation Boot Camp

Registration is now open for the Graduate School’s January 2012 Dissertation Boot Camp. DBC will be Monday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lower level of Raynor Library.

This boot camp offers a dedicated time and location for Ph.D. students to come together and work toward the completion of their dissertations, and connect with other doctoral students. Faculty facilitators will be available throughout the week to help monitor the progress and offer suggestions.

12. News Briefs schedule to change during break

Due to the Christmas holiday, News Briefs will be distributed Dec. 19 and Jan. 2, 9, 17 and 19 before resuming its twice-weekly schedule Jan. 23. There will be no News Briefs Dec. 26 due to the Gift of Time Christmas holiday. The submission deadline is noon Friday for Monday editions.

13. FAME sponsoring book swap

Friends and Alumni of Marquette English will host a book swap on the second floor of the AMU Sunday, Jan. 29, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to bring gently used or new books to share and swap. Textbooks will not be part of the book swap. Participants can take home up to half of what they provide, up to five books. 14. Jeans giveaway part of Love Your Body Week

The Center for Health Education and Promotion is sponsoring the Great Jeans Giveaway.

The Marquette community is encouraged to drop off new or gently used jeans, dress pants and workout pants during Love Your Body Week Feb. 13-17.
