1. Commencement weekend includes Mass and free parking

Nearly 500 students will participate in Marquette University’s Mid-year Commencement ceremony Sunday, Dec. 18, at 9:30 a.m. at the U.S. Cellular arena. The Baccalaureate Mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Gesu.

Dr. Michael Switzenbaum, professor and executive associate dean of engineering, will be the keynote speaker. Marquette President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., will also speak.

Pauline Pagán will be the featured student speaker. Pagán will graduate with a double major in criminology and law studies and Spanish for the professions. The first in her family to attend college, she participated in Marquette’s Educational Opportunity Program. She was active in campus, participating in multiple student organizations, as well as volunteering off campus for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, the United Community Center and Franklin Pierce Elementary School.

On Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday, Dec. 18, parking will be free of charge for all parents, relatives, guests and friends of the graduates. Complimentary parking will be available in both the 16th Street Structure and the Wells Street Structure.

2. Christmas and semester break hours of operation

Marquette University will be closed Friday, Dec. 23-Sunday, Jan. 1. Limited campus services, including Public Safety, Facility Services and the Rec Plex, will remain open. The university will reopen on Monday, Jan. 2. Buildings and services with special hours of operation during the semester break include:

3. Zurcher to be next Honors Program Director

Dr. Amelia Zurcher, associate professor of English, has been appointed as the next Honors Program Director, effective July 1, 2012. Zurcher will work with the current director, Dr. Anthony Peressini, during the spring 2012 semester to become familiar with the duties of the position.

Zurcher teaches courses in sixteenth and seventeenth century British literature, including Shakespeare, studies in genre, and studies in gender and literature. In 2008, she received Marquette's Teaching Excellence Award.  Zurcher is also the Director of Marquette’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program and teaches the Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies and the program capstone course.

The Honors Program is an academically selective program that is open to students in any of Marquette’s seven colleges. The mission of the program is to provide an education rooted in a classical humanities curriculum, particularly as it is shaped by the Jesuit ideals of rigorous academic inquiry, a habit of reflection on knowledge and experience, and growing from these, a desire to bring justice in the world.

4. Silent retreat to be offered

Campus Ministry and the Faber Center are offering a five day silent retreat in the Ignation tradition. The retreat will take place Monday, Jan. 9, through Saturday, Jan. 14, in Oshkosh, Wis. This retreat is open to all students, faculty and staff. There will be opportunities for personal prayer, reflection, rest and time outdoors. 5. Winner of Student Safety raffle announced

Ellen Toshach, sophomore in the college of business and administration, won the semester-long Escort Raffle Contest for Student Safety Programs. This contest was one part of SSP’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, which emphasizes SSP’s services to the Marquette community. “Like” SSP on Facebook to see Toshach’s photo, and to get current SSP news.

The Office of Marketing and Communication monitors local, state and national media coverage involving Marquette University. OMC distributes via e-mail a collection of the top news stories about Marquette and members of the university community every Thursday afternoon.
