1. Presidential inauguration is Sept. 22 and 23

As a reminder for the fall semester, the inauguration of Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J., as the 23rd president of Marquette University will take place Thursday and Friday, Sept. 22 and 23, 2011. Mass will take place Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Church of the Gesu, with the inaugural ceremony following on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Al McGuire Center. A luncheon for the Marquette community and guests will follow the Friday ceremony.

An Honorary Steering Committee, made up of faculty, staff, students, alumni and others, has been named to oversee the inaugural events. Janice Welburn, dean of libraries, chairs the committee. In consultation with Father Pilarz, the committee has chosen “Reflect. Imagine. Transform.” as the theme for the inauguration ceremonies. The theme is drawn from Depth, Universality, and Learned Ministry: Challenges to Jesuit Higher Education Today, the address given by Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., at Mexico City in April 2010, in which he challenges Jesuit universities to find creative ways of "promoting depth of thought and imagination, a depth that is transformative of the person."

In addition to the inaugural Mass and ceremony, other events, including an academic lecture series and several student events, are being planned. Additional details will be announced as dates are confirmed.
 
As previously announced by Provost John Pauly, with the recommendation of the University Academic Senate, classes will be canceled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, so that all students and faculty may have the opportunity to attend the inauguration ceremony. Please note that classes will not be canceled the entire day.

2. Father Prucha anniversaries to be celebrated at reception

A reception honoring Rev. Francis Paul Prucha, S.J., professor emeritus of history, will take place Thursday, May 19, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Raynor Library’s Francis Paul Prucha, S.J., Archives Reading Room.

The reception is hosted by the Department of History and University Archives in celebration of Father Prucha’s 90th birthday, 70th anniversary of his graduation from River Falls State Teachers College, 60th anniversary of entering the Jesuit order and 50th anniversary with the Department of History. No RSVP needed.

Father Prucha, a renowned scholar of United States/American Indian relations, was a Pulitzer Prize nominee for The Great Father, his magisterial work on U.S./American Indian affairs, in 1985. He is also the author or editor of numerous other books, articles and book reviews, and the recipient of six honorary degrees.

3. Law School forum looks at future of Milwaukee

The Law School, in conjunction with the Milwaukee Press Club, will sponsor the sold-out "What Now Milwaukee? A Forum on the Future of Wisconsin's Largest City" Wednesday, May 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Eckstein Hall.

Panelists will include Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett; Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele; Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Thornton; Greater Milwaukee Committee President Julia Taylor; and Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce President Tim Sheehy. The panel will be moderated by Mike Gousha, distinguished fellow in law and public policy.

While the event is sold out, there is space to watch it in Eckstein Hall via live-feed. Register online.

4. Eight new K-12 summer programs offered by College of Engineering

The College of Engineering will offer eight new programs as part of its summer 2011 Engineering Academies for K-12 students, which run throughout June, July and August. These new programs include: “Competition Robots” June 20-24 for ages 14-18; “The Attraction is Obvious: Designing Maglev Systems” July 11-15 for ages 7-12; “Science, Literature and Math, Oh My!” July 18-22 for ages 7-12; “iHeels: A Summer in Heels” July 25-29 for girls ages 6-18; “Robot Vision” July 25-29 for ages 12-18; “Acoustical Engineering: Diddley Bows and Cigar Box Guitars” Aug. 1-5 for ages 12-18; and “Integration and Innovation” June 27 to July 1 and Aug. 1-5 (two identical sessions) for incoming college freshmen and high school seniors.

5. Learn to Swim Program offered at Rec Plex

The Rec Plex is offering a Learn to Swim Program, sponsored by the American Red Cross, for children and adults from June 6 through June 29. The program is segmented into six levels, in addition to the Tiny Tots/Wee Folks program. Classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings. Cost is $35 for members and $41 for non-members.

Register in person at the Rec Plex beginning Monday, May 16.

6. Revitalizing Marquette report now available

A final report on the Revitalizing Marquette discussion series is available online.

The report reflects the discussion and commentary from the three sessions that were held during the spring 2011 semester. The series was hosted by student organizers, the Honors Program and other university departments and programs as an opportunity to reflect on and discuss the university's mission and identity, decision-making processes, commitment to human dignity and academic freedom, and to revitalize the sense of unity and identity among the Marquette community in a structured, academic setting.

7. Marquette sends 10,000th tweet on Twitter

Marquette community members can get information and stay up-to-date with Marquette happenings through multimedia and social networks. Connect with Marquette through:

• Marquette on Twitter – in 140 characters or less. Marquette sent its 10,000th tweet this week.

• Marquette’s Facebook page, as well as many Marquette departmental pages. More than 15,000 fans follow Marquette’s Facebook page.
