1. Expert on economics of higher education to deliver Marburg Lecture

Ronald G. Ehrenberg, Irving M. Ives Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Economics at Cornell University and an expert in the economics of higher education, will deliver the annual Marburg Lecture Wednesday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries, Beaumier Suites.

Ehrenberg has served as a consultant to faculty and administrative groups and trustees at a number of colleges and universities on issues relating to tuition and financial aid policies and other budgetary and planning issues. In 2002, he wrote Tuition Rising, a critically acclaimed examination of the American higher education system. The Marburg Lecture is named in honor of the late Theodore F. Marburg, a long-time member of the economics department at Marquette, and provides a forum for the discussion of moral, philosophical and social dimensions of economic issues.

2. Applications for Women's and Gender Studies fellowships due March 23

Marquette's Women's and Gender Studies program is seeking proposals for four research fellowships to be awarded to faculty and undergraduate students beginning in the summer of 2012.

Two $4,000 collaborative research fellowships will be awarded to faculty/undergraduate student teams for research to be performed in the summer and fall of 2012 related to gender and/or sexuality. In addition, two undergraduate summer research fellowships of $750 each will be awarded for undergraduate research related to gender and/or sexuality, performed under the supervision of a faculty member during the summer of 2012. 

Students and faculty in all disciplines and colleges are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, students must be Marquette undergraduates who will be enrolled at Marquette in the fall of 2012. All fellowship recipients will be expected to present their research to the Marquette community at a formal event in November.

3. Italian Renaissance music and art to be discussed at Haggerty

The Haggerty Museum of Art, in collaboration with Early Music Now, will host a discussion on the music and art of the Italian Renaissance, followed by a short musical performance Thursday, March 15, at 6 p.m. at the Haggerty. Dr. Lezlie Knox, associate professor of history, will speak about the culture and history of the Italian Renaissance, followed by a performance by Piffaro, a group that recreates music of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods. 4. RSVP for Milwaukee Servant Leadership Event

The College of Professional Studies is one of the sponsors of the Milwaukee Servant Leadership Event, Tuesday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Milwaukee Theatre, 500 W. 5. Applications for Pedro Arrupe scholarship due March 23

The Pedro Arrupe Award, a $2,500 scholarship is available for a junior in good standing and enrolled full-time, who is involved in service both in and beyond the Marquette community and who emulates the values and ideals of Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. A faculty or staff nomination is required along with the student application and essay, due March 23.

6. Spring classroom requests available for exams

Faculty can submit an online form to request classroom space from the Registrar for spring 2012 course review sessions and final exams until May 1. Before reserving a separate classroom for student testing accommodations, faculty should contact the testing coordinator in the Office of Disability Services. This office arranges space and a proctor for students who qualify for testing accommodations, such as private rooms, extra time and text-to-speech software.

Reservations can be made throughout the semester, without scheduling through the Office of the Registrar or Event Management. Review the test proctoring guidelines from Disability Services for more information.

7. Grow with Marquette adding "Lacrosse 101" class

Grow with Marquette has added a new class, “Lacrosse 101: Meet Marquette’s Newest Varsity Teams,” Thursday, April 26, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. Participants will learn about Marquette’s newest varsity sport, which will begin its inaugural season in spring 2013. Head coaches Joe Amplo and Meredith Black will be in attendance to discuss America’s fastest-growing sport, and student-athletes will demonstrate some of the techniques of the sport. Contact Grow with Marquette at 8-1560 to enroll.

8. Lenten Taize Service will be held March 20

Brother Emile, from the ecumenical community of brothers in Taize, France, will lead a Lenten Taize Service, “Around the Cross,” Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at Calvary Church, 935 W. Wisconsin Ave. Following the service, Brother Emile will engage students in a discussion on the Taize community’s work with young people and their mission throughout the world. People of all faith traditions are welcome to join for an evening of contemplative prayer and song.

9. $7 massages available at Massage-A-Thon

Physical therapy students will host a Massage-A-Thon from Monday, March 19, through Friday, April 13, at Schroeder Health Complex, 397. Hours are Mondays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The cost is $7 for every 15 minutes, up to 60 minutes. Appointments can be scheduled by e-mail. Walk-ins are welcome, and cash or checks are accepted.

10. Spirit Shop hat sales benefit military veterans

The Marquette Spirit Shop is participating in a national program called Operation Hat Trick (OHT), a program that builds support and funds for soldiers and veterans seeking medical treatment in VA medical centers. Two officially-licensed Marquette hats are now available in the Spirit Shop, priced from $18 to $24.
