1. 13 faculty members promoted to emerita/emeritus status

Thirteen faculty members have been conferred with emerita/emeritus status. Dr. William Wiener, former vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School, will hold the rank of dean emeritus. Dr. Paul Bankston, professor of mathematics, statistics and computer science; Dr. Edwin Block, professor of English; Dr. Brian Brush, professor of economics; Dr. George Corliss, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Shrinivas Joshi, professor of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. John Krugler, professor of history; Dr. Michael Switzenbaum, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering; Dr. Barry Velleman, professor of foreign languages and literatures; and Dr. Sriramulu Vinnakota, professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering, were each designated professor emeritus.

Dr. Kate Kaiser, associate professor of management, and Dr. Susan Riedel, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, were each designated associate professor emerita. Dr. Karl Byleen, associate professor of mathematics, statistics and computer science, was designated associate professor emeritus.

The rank of emeritus may be conferred upon a retiring tenured faculty member or a retiring academic administrator in recognition of the sustained high-quality performance shown throughout his/her career. The University Committee on Faculty Promotions and Tenure recommends emerita/emeritus cases to the provost and president for final approval. The emerita/emeritus ranking takes effect upon retirement.

2. College of Nursing to co-host Wisconsin Cancer Survivorship Forum

The College of Nursing is co-hosting the third annual Wisconsin Cancer Survivorship Forum Wednesday, June 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the AMU Ballrooms. The forum is aimed at survivors and health care providers, and will feature local and national speakers, a panel discussion, breakout sessions and an area for exhibitors.

3. University mourns death of Dovetta Jackson

Marquette University mourns the death of Dovetta Jackson, who served the university as a financial aid assistant in the Office of the Bursar from 1985 to 2002. She passed away May 15. A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 22, at Christian Faith Fellowship.

4. Celebration for Julie Tolan will be held May 30

A celebration honoring the contributions of Julie Tolan, vice president for University Advancement, to Marquette, will be held Wednesday, May 30, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Eckstein Hall's Zilber Forum. A program will take place at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Earlier this week, Tolan announced that she will leave her position on June 30 to pursue leadership opportunities outside of Marquette. Her last day on campus will be May 31. Under her leadership, Marquette achieved record-breaking fundraising success, with more than $100 million raised in 2007 and 2008 and $75 million raised in 2010. In total, nearly $650 million in fundraising is credited to Tolan's tenure as vice president, including campaigns for Eckstein Hall and Engineering Hall.

5. Compendium submission deadline is May 31

Faculty and staff with professional accomplishments, such as publications, presentations and awards, should make sure they are documented by submitting them online by Thursday, May 31. Accomplishments that have occurred since Dec. 1, 2011 will be used to compile the summer issue, which will be distributed in late August.

7. Future Milwaukee accepting applications for 2012-13 class

The Future Milwaukee Leadership Program is accepting applications through Saturday, June 30, for its 2012-13 class. Sessions will begin in September and run through May 2013, primarily from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. two times each month on Monday evenings. Tuition for the 24-session program is $1,800, with limited financial aid available. Applications are available online.

Since 1978, Future Milwaukee, which since 2005 has been housed in Marquette University's College of Professional Studies, has been building a diverse group of ethically based leaders among all sectors of the Milwaukee community. To date, there are more than 1,400 Future Milwaukee graduates who serve as leaders in business, nonprofit, government and community organizations throughout the region. Each year, Future Milwaukee participants work in teams with area nonprofit organizations on major projects, ranging from fundraising initiatives to comprehensive marketing communication plans. 8. Submit online parking application by June 25

Full-time employees who want to park in one of the university-owned parking facilities for the 2012-2013 academic year need to complete an online application form by June 25. Applications can be found online. Parking assignments and new permits will be issued in mid-August, and will be valid for the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 academic years. Parking assignments will be made based primarily on length of service to the university.

9. Buzz's BBQ is June 27

The Marquette community is invited to a Texas-style BBQ hosted by Men's Head Basketball Coach Buzz Williams, Wednesday, June 27, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the Central Mall. Entering its fifth summer, the annual event features Williams and current and former Marquette basketball players, games and a Texas-style BBQ dinner.

Marquette CIRCLES, an innovative business networking program that connects Marquette alumni, parents and friends, will be held Thursday, May 31, at 5 p.m. in the Lambeau Field Atrium, 1256 Lombardi Ave., Green Bay, Wis.

Opening remarks will be given by President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., followed by presentations by Mark Murphy, president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers; John F. Bergstrom, Marquette alumnus and trustee emeritus, and CEO of Bergstrom Automotive; and Willie Davis, Marquette trustee emeritus, and president and CEO of All Pro Broadcasting, Inc.

11. Piano sale open to Marquette community members

A large selection of used grand, baby grand and other pianos used on campus by Marquette students, as well as other keyboards, orchestral string instruments and guitars will be on sale May 25 through May 28 as part of a partnership between Marquette and the Rockley Family Foundation. Most instruments are less than a year old and include a new factory warranty and tuning. The event will be held in the Varsity Theatre.

12. Register for annual faculty/staff golf outing

Full-time faculty and staff are invited to register for the annual faculty/staff golf outing, which will be held Thursday, June 14, beginning at 11:20 a.m. at Brookfield Hills Golf Course. The cost is $32 and includes 18 holes of golf, food, door prizes and awards.

13. Employees invited to participate in Bike Challenge

Marquette employees are invited to join one of the university teams participating in the National Bike Challenge, a free program that rewards cyclists for riding their bike. By logging their bike mileage through the Endomondo website or smartphone app, Marquette team participants can earn points that enter them in drawings for prizes.

The contest is ongoing and runs until August 31. Currently, Marquette has 36 riders enrolled, who have logged more than 3,500 miles since May 1. At this time, Marquette is in 13th place in the nation for most miles logged for a large-sized university.

Those who are interested can request to join one of two Marquette-affiliated teams: Employee Wellness III or Marquette University.

14. Volunteer to help Hunger Task Force distribute summer meal signs

Hunger Task Force, a Marquette community partner, needs volunteers to help distribute summer meals signs at meal sites throughout the city, Thursday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Child hunger increases during the summer months when kids are out of school. The summer meals program makes sure local kids get the meals they need, free of charge and with no paperwork.
