1. Campus community celebrates 50th anniversary of Second Vatican Council

In this global "Year of Faith" declared by Pope Benedict XVI, the Catholic Church is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. Marquette's commemoration of Vatican II began Oct. 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the Council's opening, and will end Nov. 24, 2013, the Feast of Christ the King.

"This anniversary is an important learning opportunity for our university community," says President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J. "So many of us, myself included, have no living memory of the Church before Vatican II. It is a challenge for us to imagine the seismic shift it represented. The Council changed almost every aspect of Catholic culture and experience, especially our world view. I think in particular of Gaudium et Spes and the world view it articulates. From our vantage point 50 years later, we can take that for granted. This anniversary provides an opportunity to explore anew."

Lectures, book discussions, interfaith panels and other events throughout the year will celebrate the spirit of the Council, which continues to animate the Church and Marquette's mission as a Catholic, Jesuit university.

University departments and student organizations interested in sponsoring a program that celebrates Vatican II and its heritage should contact Vatican II Committee Chair Rev. Thomas Anderson, S.J., at 8-4203. A listing of campus events, historical information and links to other resources are available online.

2. Campus card reader test will take place Jan. 3

The Department of Public Safety will run a lockdown test of campus card readers Thursday, Jan. 3, at approximately 10:15 a.m. During the test, which is anticipated to last less than five minutes, all card readers on campus will lock. Those who have clearance on their MUID card to enter a given door will still be able to do so during the drill. Those who do not have MUID clearance to enter given doors will be unable to open those doors during the drill.

The ability to lock down all readers on campus is a critical function for the campus community in case of an emergency. For additional information, contact Katie Berigan, lieutenant in the Department of Public Safety, at (414) 881-6790.
