1. Engineers Without Borders founder to deliver Mission Week keynote address today

Dr. Bernard Amadei, founding president of Engineers Without Borders USA and co-founder of Engineers Without Borders – International, will present Mission Week's keynote address, "Engineering for the Developing World: From Crisis to Development," today at 4 p.m. in the AMU, Monaghan Ballroom.

Amadei is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder and director of the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities. He will discuss how population growth, especially in developing or underdeveloped countries, will create unprecedented demands on resources that will be critical for engineers to address, and will propose ways to contribute to the building of a more sustainable, stable and equitable world.

There will be a reception in the Lynch Lounge immediately following the keynote address. This event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required, but individuals are asked to register for the event by emailing University Special Events. The event is sponsored by the College of Engineering, Graduate School of Management, Marquette University Student Government, the Office of Mission and Ministry and the Office of the Provost's Social Innovation Initiative.

2. Women's and Gender Studies program offering four research fellowships

Marquette's Women's and Gender Studies program is seeking proposals for four research fellowships to be awarded to faculty and undergraduate students beginning in the summer of 2012.

Two $4,000 collaborative research fellowships will be awarded to faculty/undergraduate student teams for research to be performed in the summer and fall of 2012 related to gender and/or sexuality. In addition, two undergraduate summer research fellowships of $750 each will be awarded for undergraduate research related to gender and/or sexuality, performed under the supervision of a faculty member during the summer of 2012.

Students and faculty in all disciplines and colleges are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, students must be Marquette undergraduates who will be enrolled at Marquette in the fall of 2012. All fellowship recipients will be expected to present their research to the Marquette community at a formal event in November.

Ash Wednesday Mass and distribution of ashes will be held at the following times and locations tomorrow:

4. Youth Empowered in the Struggle diversity rally to be held Thursday

Youth Empowered in the Struggle, a Marquette student organization, will host a public rally marking the beginning of its "Open Up, Marquette!" campaign aimed at showcasing and fostering diversity on campus, Thursday, Feb. 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., on the Central Mall. In the event of rain or snow, the rally will be moved indoors to the AMU.

5. Summer study abroad applications due March 1

Summer study abroad programs are available in Cuba, China, Cyprus and Morocco, among other locations. The summer study abroad program allows students to immerse themselves in a new culture and complete course requirements during the summer.

6. "A Portrait of a Cuba" photography display tomorrow

Jennifer Janviere, multimedia specialist in the Diederich College of Communication, will a host an art exhibition on her educational trip to Cuba tomorrow at 4 p.m. in Johnston Hall's jPad. In December 2010, Janviere photographed and gathered firsthand accounts of life in Havana and the Pinar del Rio region. She will share details from her trip and reflect on the importance of promoting a dialogue between the United States and its neighbors to the south.

8. "On the Issues with Mike Gousha" features February Law School Poll

The results of the latest Marquette Law School Poll will be the topic of "On the Issues with Mike Gousha," tomorrow, Feb. 22, at 12:15 p.m. in Eckstein Hall. Professor Charles Franklin, the director of the poll and a nationally recognized expert in voter analysis, will discuss with Gousha the latest insights into voter attitudes on the possible gubernatorial recall, open U.S. Senate seat, presidential election and more. The complete results of the February poll will also be released tomorrow.

9. MPTV's "4th Street Forum" to tape show at Marquette, feature nursing faculty member

Milwaukee Public Television's "Fourth Street Forum" will tape part five of its "Poverty of Healthcare" series at Marquette on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m., in the AMU, Monaghan Ballroom. Kelli Jones, RN, clinical instructor in the College of Nursing, will take part in a panel discussion around preventative healthcare and the best ways to tackle illness and poverty simultaneously.

The taping is open to the campus community. The show will air on MPTV Channel 36.1 on Friday, March 2, at 9 p.m., and on MPTV Channel 10.1 on Sunday, March 4, at 9 a.m.

12. Eastern Orthodox Vespers Service tonight

The Marquette chapter of Orthodox Christian Fellowship (OCF) will host an Eastern Orthodox Vespers service tonight at 6:30 p.m. in St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Vespers is an evening prayer service that is spiritual and peaceful, filled with God's love in Christ through the Holy Spirit. The service is open to the entire Marquette community.
