1. Mission Week 2012: Who is my neighbor?

Each February, the Marquette community pauses to reflect on our university's Catholic, Jesuit mission. Mission Week is the time set aside to recall our larger purpose and the Ignatian heritage and spirituality that guide us throughout the year.

This year’s theme is “Who is my neighbor?” Throughout the week of Feb. 19, the Marquette community will be invited to reflect on who their neighbors are locally, nationally and internationally, and to examine how they can create international networks to address issues of faith, justice and ecology.

The week will begin Sunday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m., with a Mass at the Church of the Gesu celebrated by Father Doug Leonhardt, S.J. Marquette President Scott R. Pilarz, S.J., will join Father Leonhardt as homilist.

The keynote address will be given by Dr. Bernard Amadei, founding president of Engineers Without Borders USA and co-founder of Engineers Without Borders — International. His address, Engineering for the Developing World: From Crisis to Development, will be Tuesday, Feb. 21 in AMU Monaghan Ballroom at 4 p.m.

Amadei  is a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder and director of the Mortenson Center in Engineering for Developing Communities. Amadei dedicates his curriculum and research to educating globally responsible engineering students and professionals who can help create sustainable solutions to the endemic problems faced by developing communities worldwide.

Amadei will discuss how population growth, especially in developing or underdeveloped countries, will create unprecedented demands on resources that will be critical for engineers to address. He will propose ways that we can contribute to the building of a more sustainable, stable and equitable world.

2. Manresa Scholars Program accepting applications for 2012-13

Manresa Scholars Program is now accepting applications for the 2012-2013 academic year. This program invites junior and senior students to explore and discern their vocation through weekly service and regular reflection. Manresa Scholars receive an $8,000 tuition scholarship and engage in weekly meetings and an annual retreat.

3. Transportation available for basketball games at DePaul

Students are invited to cheer on both the Marquette men’s and women’s basketball teams as they play at DePaul in February. Marquette will provide a bus to the games that will leave from the Al McGuire Center and return immediately after the games. Tickets cost $25 each and include a game ticket, transportation and dinner on the bus.

• The men’s basketball team will play Monday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. at Allstate Arena. The bus will depart at 5 p.m. Students can purchase tickets online.
• The women’s basketball team will play Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1:30 p.m. at McGrath Arena. The bus will depart at 10:30 a.m. Students can purchase tickets online.

4. Jeans giveaway part of Love Your Body Week

The Center for Health Education and Promotion will sponsor the Great Jeans Giveaway as part of Love Your Body Week, Feb. 13-17. The Marquette community is encouraged to drop off new or gently used jeans, dress pants and workout pants in collection bins around campus. All donated items will be provided to a nonprofit in the Milwaukee area.

5. Annual Ciszek Lecture to be presented

The Marquette University Knights of Columbus will present the 2012 Ciszek Lecture Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in AMU 227. Rev. Cliff Ermatinger, pastor of St. Anthony Parish and author of St. Augustine Answers 101 Questions on Prayer, will present "Who is Speaking? – The Discernment of Spirits." A reception will follow the free, public event.

6. Dance and a cappella showcase to benefit Hunger Clean-Up

Hunger Clean-Up will host a dance and a cappella showcase “Moves 4 Milwaukee,” Thursday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m in the Weasler. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free, however donations will be accepted. Performances include Dance Inc., Pure Dance, Studio 013 Refugees and the Gold N’ Blues.

7. Civil Rights Pilgrimage applications are being accepted

Multicultural Affairs, in the Office of Student Development, is accepting applications to attend the 2012 Civil Right Pilgrimage Friday, March 9, to Saturday, March 17. This is an opportunity for students to explore key locations central to the Civil Rights Movement and to discover its impact. This year’s pilgrimage will take students to:

• Atlanta, Ga.
• Selma, Ala.
• Montgomery, Ala.
• Birmingham, Ala.
• Jackson, Miss.
• Memphis, Tenn.

Information sessions will be held Monday, Feb. 6, and Monday, Feb. 13, from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Center in AMU, Room 121. The trip is $200 and includes transportation, lodging and attraction costs. A $100 deposit is due Wednesday, Feb. 8, and a final payment is due Monday, Feb. 20, by 5 p.m.

8. Dave Sobelman to speak Tuesday

Dave Sobelman, founder of Sobelmans Restaurants, will discuss how he started his business Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m., in Cudahy 001. Pizza will be served at the free, public event, which is sponsored by the Collegiate Entrepreneurs of Marquette.

9. Zipcar information session Tuesday

The Office of Sustainability and a representative from Zipcar will host an information session on car-sharing and the benefits of the Zipcar program at Marquette Tuesday, Jan. 31, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in AMU, Room 157. Refreshments and cookies will be provided.

10. 15th Annual Brew City Stomp Down Step Show this Saturday

Marquette’s National Pan-Hellenic Council will co-host the 15th Annual Brew City Stomp Down Step Show Saturday, Feb 4., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theatre.

The show will feature some of the best fraternity and sorority step teams from across the Midwest. Media personality “Free,” V100.7's Reggie Brown and Marquette’s-own DJ PoiZon Ivy will host the event.

11. Nominations sought for outstanding female staff

Multicultural Affairs, in the Office of Student Development, is seeking nominations for the Third Annual Golden Roses: A Tribute to the Women at Marquette. Golden Roses is a celebration recognizing female staff, faculty and administrators for their contributions towards supporting underrepresented students in the campus community.

12. Lecture on Ojibwe life in the Great Lakes Tuesday

Dr. Brenda Child will present a lecture based on her new book, Holding Our World Together: Ojibwe Women and the Survival of Community, Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 4:30 p.m. in the Raynor Memorial Libraries' Beaumier Suites B/C.

This will be the first of three lectures for the spring semester in conjunction with a traveling Lewis and Clark exhibition. Child is an associate professor of American Studies and American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota.

13. Compost Workshop next Tuesday

Students for an Environmentally Active Campus and the Office of Sustainability will co-host a compost workshop Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m. in AMU 157.
The workshop will cover how to get started composting, how to maintain a compost pile, how to use compost and a discussion about the societal value of composting.

14. Celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

Campus Ministry will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Thursday, Feb. 2, at 10 p.m in St. Joan of Arc Chapel. The Mass will include a blessing of candles and a candlelight procession.

15. Praise and worship offered Monday, Feb. 6

A praise and worship style prayer will be offered Monday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m. in the AMU Chapel of the Holy Family, followed by fellowship. This prayer is co-sponsored by Campus Ministry, Cru, InterVarsity, Knights of Columbus and Lutheran Campus Ministry. 16. Conference on pediatric behavioral health research to be held

The 5th Annual Interdisciplinary Pediatric Behavioral Health Research Conference, “Exploring New Research Directions,” will be held Friday, Feb. 24, in Wauwatosa. The conference is sponsored by the Children's Research Institute and co-sponsored by the Medical College of Wisconsin, Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

People practicing or training in the fields of psychology, social work, counseling, medicine, nursing, and public and allied health are encouraged to attend. Register online by Sunday, Feb. 19, at 11:59 p.m.

17. DPS lobby available for Craigslist transactions

Marquette University’s Department of Public Safety recommends using caution when conducting Internet transactions, including Craigslist. Always meet in public spaces and take someone with you when meeting with people you met online. Never allow someone to meet you at your residence. Public Safety and the Milwaukee Police Department have made their office lobbies available to conduct transactions.

18. Student news requested for hometown and social media

The Office of Marketing and Communication is launching a new initiative focused on newsworthy student activities and achievements.
 
OMC will use a software program that sends student news to geographically specific hometown print and online media. Students will also receive an email about the posting and can share the information with their own social networks.
 
Graduation announcements, dean’s lists, national and university awards and major projects are among the stories that will be posted. If you have story ideas that you think should be covered, contact Amanda Gottheardt, communication office associate in OMC. OMC will not be able to send information for any student with a FERPA block.
