1. College of Nursing awarded $5 million for partnership with Veterans Affairs nursing program

The Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen the College of Nursing and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center as one of six sites in the nation to participate in a five-year VA Nursing Academic Partnership Program. The $5 million partnership will prepare Marquette nursing students to promote health, healing and social justice for veterans and their families through culturally based and spiritually reflective clinical practice.

The program will fund 10 additional, full-time College of Nursing faculty members during the next five years. These faculty members will enable the College of Nursing to increase its freshman class size by 20 students this year (from 110 last year to 130 admitted for fall 2013) and by 20 students in subsequent years, for a maximum enrollment of 150 students beginning with the 2014-15 academic year.

"This significant partnership will allow us to meet an important health care need in the Milwaukee community, and to be a part of the solution for the national nursing shortage," said Dr. Margaret Faut Callahan, dean of the College of Nursing and interim provost. "Marquette's College of Nursing is committed to embedding itself within the Milwaukee community by partnering with health care leaders like the Milwaukee VA. We are thrilled to be able to teach the next generation of nurses a veteran-centric approach to health care with the support and partnership of the Milwaukee VA and the Department of Veterans Affairs."

Veteran-centric educational opportunities will be woven throughout the college's pre-licensure curriculum for all undergraduates. Undergraduate students interested in veteran-centric care can apply to a competitive cohort program, where they will follow the pre-licensure curriculum but will complete their five required clinical placements at the Milwaukee VA. Students in the cohort may also participate in a cultural immersion experience at various VA locations. The program's goal is to place graduates into nursing positions at the Milwaukee VA or at another VA facility.

The five other nursing programs chosen as partner schools in the VA Nursing Academic Partner Program are: Arizona State University, Emory University, New Mexico University, Oregon Health and Science University, and University of Minnesota.

2. Visit provost search website for progress updates

A provost search website is now available for the campus community to stay updated on the search process. It includes the provost search timeline, search protocol and the list of provost search committee members.

The search committee and the Office of the President will begin by soliciting ideas and input from many sources across campus, including University Academic Senate, to develop and identify the most important characteristics of the ideal candidate. Faculty and staff are invited to participate in two open forums to contribute to this discussion:

  • Monday, June 24, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the AMU, 157: Open forum for all faculty members

  • Tuesday, June 25, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Zilber, 025: Open forum for all staff in academic divisions

The university has retained the search firm Isaacson, Miller, which conducted the search for the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The new provost is expected to start in time for the 2014-15 academic year.

3. Update on city sewer maintenance affecting campus

The City of Milwaukee is conducting ongoing sewer maintenance that will impact some campus buildings and walkways. Work on the 15th Street Mall (by Olin Engineering) is now complete, but equipment will remain on the site as other nearby work is completed. Preparation work will begin today on 17th Street between Wells Street and Wisconsin Avenue, which will be closed for maintenance the week of June 17. This work is expected to impact portions of McCabe Hall, Humphrey Hall, Academic Support Building, 16th Street Parking Structure and the Gilman Building. Occupants have been notified of the specific impacts for their building.

The maintenance work being done to the sewer lines includes a curing process that will create a foul smell. Safety information for the curing products has been reviewed and is available through the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, 8-8411.
