1. Parking and traffic changes for Move-in Day, Aug. 20

Some employee parkers are being asked to relocate Wednesday, Aug. 20, for Freshmen Move-in Day. Employees who park in the 16th Street Parking Structure are asked to park on levels four, five or six of the structure that day. Employees who park in the Wells Street Parking Structure and those who park in Lots F, G, R and RR are asked to park on levels four through seven of the Wells Street Parking Structure.

To accommodate move-in traffic, 16th Street will be closed to through traffic beginning at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20. Employees parking in the 16th Street Structure must enter from the 17th Street entrance. 13th Street will also be closed to through traffic. Two campus bus stops will also be temporarily relocated to accommodate the street closures: the bus stop at 16th and Wisconsin will move to 17th and Wisconsin, and the bus stop at 16th and Wells will move to 16th and Kilbourn.

Student Safety Programs will run a shuttle service for drivers to utilize from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that day for displaced drivers to get back and forth to their cars. After 5 p.m., employees can use the LIMO service or call DPS at (414) 288-6800.

All employees who park in the affected structure and lot locations also received a letter from Tom Ganey, vice president of planning, requesting their cooperation to make the arrival process for freshmen students more efficient and welcoming.

2. Haggerty Museum Director Wally Mason to leave Marquette; Lee Coppernoll to serve as interim director

After seven years as director of the Haggerty Museum of Art, Wally Mason is leaving his position to serve as the director of the University of Nebraska's Sheldon Museum of Art. Mason's last day at Marquette will be Sept. 12.

During his tenure at the Haggerty Museum, Mason was dedicated to providing arts-based educational programming for Marquette students and the greater Milwaukee community. Under Mason's leadership, the Haggerty Museum in 2011 received three collections comprising more than 135 pieces, including works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, the first time the museum was gifted three collections of that size and scope within one year. Also under Mason's leadership, the Haggerty Museum added an in-house digital collection database to its website to allow visitors to view more than 1,100 artworks online, representing approximately 350 artists from 29 different countries.

Lee Coppernoll, associate director of the Haggerty Museum, will serve as interim director while the university conducts a nation-wide search for a permanent director of the Haggerty Museum.

3. New department chairs for 2014-15 academic year announced

Several departments across campus have new chairs for the 2014-15 academic year. Capt. Daniel Olson, professor of naval science, will chair the Department of Naval Science; Dr. Nancy Snow, professor of philosophy, will chair the Department of Philosophy; Dr. Brian Bennett, professor of physics, will chair the Department of Physics; Dr. Robert Masson, associate professor of theology, will chair the Department of Theology; Dr. Anthony Pennington-Cross, professor of finance, will chair the Department of Finance; Dr. John Pauly, professor of journalism and media studies, will chair the Department of Journalism and Media Studies; Dr. Scott D'Urso, associate professor of communication studies, will chair the Department of Communication Studies; Dr. April Harkins, associate professor of clinical laboratory science, will chair the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science; and Dr. Kim Halula, associate dean and clinical professor, will be the interim chair of the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

4. Fall 2014 classroom assignments posted in CheckMarq

Access CheckMarq to find the most up-to-date fall 2014 course classroom assignments. Faculty members should email Alexander Frain or Gregory Deuchars, Office of the Registrar, if they are unable to locate where a course is meeting. Once assigned, courses may only be moved for ADA issues or if enrollment exceeds assigned room capacity. Complete the Schedule of Classes Change Request web form and submit no later than Monday, Aug. 18, to request a classroom assignment change.

5. Annual Mass of the Holy Spirit is Aug. 24

The Marquette community is invited to celebrate the beginning of the academic year at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, which will be held Sunday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. at Church of the Gesu. Rev. Thomas Anderson, S.J., will preside. All are welcome to give thanks for and celebrate the many gifts of the Marquette family.

6. Inauguration Ceremony, Inaugural Ball tickets available for pick-up beginning next week

Tickets for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony will be available for pick-up while supplies last in the AMU Brooks Lounge during normal business hours beginning Monday, Aug. 25. Staff and faculty not participating in the academic procession at the Inauguration Ceremony can pick up one ticket per Marquette ID. Brooks Lounge hours can be found on the Inauguration website.

All members of the faculty have been invited to participate in the Inauguration Ceremony academic procession. Members of the academic procession will represent a cross-section of the Marquette family, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends, as well as community representatives and delegates from learned societies and other universities. Faculty should indicate their participation in the academic procession by Friday, Aug. 29. Faculty participating in the academic procession do not need a ticket for the ceremony. Faculty who are not walking in the academic procession will need a ticket for the ceremony and should pick one up in the AMU Brooks Lounge.

Academic apparel will be worn for the academic procession. Members of the procession are responsible for providing their own academic apparel, which can be ordered online by Friday, Aug. 29. Distribution of academic apparel will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the AMU 448.

The Inauguration Ceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. Doors will open at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at the Helfaer Recreation Center. All members of the Marquette community are also invited to the Inaugural Mass on Thursday, Sept. 18, but are reminded that seating inside Church of the Gesu is limited. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. Mass. Tickets are not required for the Mass.

Complimentary tickets for the Inaugural Ball for faculty, staff and students, will be available in the AMU Brooks Lounge beginning Tuesday, Aug. 26. One ticket per Marquette ID will be available while supplies last. The Inaugural Ball will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 p.m. to midnight in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom. Semi-formal attire is requested.

7. Sign up to host a table at this semester's O-Fest and Community Service Fair

The Office of Student Development will host this semester's O-Fest and Community Service Fair on Thursday, Aug. 28, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Central Mall. Many of Marquette's 270 student organizations will join local community service agencies and university departments to showcase involvement opportunities and services available to students.

8. Join Al's Run team and kick-off Inauguration Week with President Lovell and Coach Wojo

Registration is open for Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m. More than 16,000 participants, including President Michael R. Lovell and Head Men's Basketball Coach Steve Wojciechowski are expected to line up on Marquette's campus for an 8K run and 3- and 5-mile walks to help make a difference in the lives of children from across Wisconsin. The event was founded by former Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire and has raised more than $14 million for the hospital to fund medical care, research and education.

The race starts at 12th Street and Wisconsin Avenue and continues to Lake Michigan near the Summerfest grounds. There is a $25 registration fee for walkers and a $30 registration fee for runners, both of which include a special, Marquette Presidential Inauguration-branded T-shirt if registration is completed before Wednesday, Aug. 27, at 5 p.m. Register online as an individual or with a Marquette team. 9. 2014-15 Marquette Theatre season announced

Marquette Theatre has announced its 2014-15 season, which will begin Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Helfaer Theatre. This year will mark 40 years of productions at the Helfaer Theatre with shows centered on the theme "home." Shows include: Our Town; In the Red and Brown Water; How I Became a Pirate; The Liar; and Company.

10. D2L introductory training sessions offered

Desire2Learn Introductory Instructor Training will be offered through the Center for Teaching and Learning on multiple dates in August. Sessions will be held in Raynor Memorial Libraries 330B on the following days:

  • Aug. 19, 10 a.m. to noon
  • Aug. 20, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Aug. 21, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The training is for faculty who are interested in learning the basics of using D2L in face-to-face, blended and online courses. These sessions will cover the essential components of D2L, where to find them and what you can do with them.

Faculty who need help with D2L but cannot attend the scheduled sessions should contact the IT Services Help Desk at (414) 288-7799.

11. Take advantage of Employee Wellness events this fall

Employee Wellness has many opportunities for faculty and staff:

  • Fall group fitness class registrations are open. Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 2. To see a schedule of classes and to register, check the group fitness calendar located on the Employee Wellness website.

  • Guided meditation classes are back. Employee Wellness will be offering one, four-week beginner session Sept. 3-24 and one, eight-week intermediate to advanced session from Oct. 1 to Nov. 19. For more information or to register, go online.

  • Employee Wellness will continue to offer "Fitness At Work" demonstrations to any department that would like to participate. Free resources will be given at each demonstration, which can be set up by contacting Kristin Kipp, wellness coordinator, at (414) 288-5607.

  • The Westown Farmers Market is open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of October. Employees are encouraged to gather in the lower level of Zilber Hall around noon to walk together.

  • Register for the Milwaukee Heart Walk online. Employee Wellness is also looking for employees to serve as captains for the Milwaukee Heart Walk. Contact Kipp if interested.
