1. Prayer vigil for alumnus James Foley is tomorrow at Gesu Church

A prayer vigil in memory of alumnus and freelance journalist James Foley, Arts '96, and in support of the Foley family will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 6 p.m. in the Church of the Gesu. Doors will open at 5 p.m. All members of the Marquette and Milwaukee communities are welcome. The university will provide free parking in the Wells Street Structure (located at 13th and Wells streets) for attendees.

Those who are unable to join are encouraged to pray A Prayer for Journalists. Rev. Frederick Zagone, S.J., assistant to the vice president and University Advancement chaplain, also offers this prayer for James.

James, who majored in history at Marquette, had a heart for social justice and used his immense talents to tell the difficult stories in the hopes that they might make a difference in the world – a measure of his character for which we could not be prouder.

Following his first capture in 2011, after he safely returned from Libya, James expressed in a letter to the Marquette community the power and strength he drew not only from his own prayer, but the prayers of his family and friends. As a community, we offer this prayer for peace.

Working with the family and friends of James Foley, Marquette has established the James Foley Scholarship Fund in the Diederich College of Communication. Please remember James and his family in prayer, and continue to pray for peace throughout our world.

3. President Lovell gathers higher education leaders from greater Milwaukee to help region aim higher

Presidents and senior academic leaders from across the region met at Marquette late last week to foster collaboration around student innovation and entrepreneurship, following an invitation from President Michael R. Lovell. The theme of the day was that the colleges and universities of southeast Wisconsin can accomplish great things when they come together and collaborate. Attendees included presidents and other high-ranking officials from institutions as diverse as technical colleges, the region's medical college and larger universities with extensive undergraduate and graduate programs. It was the first time in memory that top higher education executives from across the seven-county region, representing 20 institutions in all, gathered to discuss collaboration.

Front and center at the meeting was an immediate opportunity for cross-university collaboration: a proposed initiative known as The Commons, which aims to bring together students from across the region and support them in developing entrepreneurial talents, pursuing ideas for start-up companies and working on projects that help existing companies innovate. Operating in a planned space in Walker's Point through a partnership of Startup Milwaukee and the Greater Milwaukee Committee's Innovation in Milwaukee Initiative, The Commons will serve as a hub where like-minded students gather for workshops, intensive mentoring and access to funding and other resources. Not only will students gain real-world experience in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship, but they will also build networks that extend into the region's entrepreneurial and corporate ranks.

The first running group will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26. Paces and distances of the runs will vary.
