1. History Department to host commemorative WWI events

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, the Department of History will host a series of events to re-examine the war, including four public lectures by internationally known experts on the war. A complete list of events is online.

2. Faculty RSVP deadline for participation in Inauguration Ceremony academic procession, apparel orders: Aug. 29

All members of the faculty have been invited to participate in the Inauguration Ceremony academic procession. Members of the academic procession will represent a cross-section of the Marquette family, including faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends, as well as community representatives and delegates from learned societies and other universities. Faculty should RSVP regarding their participation in the academic procession by Friday, Aug. 29. Faculty participating in the academic procession do not need a ticket for the ceremony. Faculty who are not walking in the procession will need a ticket for the ceremony. One ticket per Marquette ID for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is available for pick-up while supplies last in the AMU Brooks Lounge during normal business. Brooks Lounge hours can be found on the Inauguration website.

Academic apparel will be worn for the academic procession. Members of the procession are responsible for providing their own academic apparel, which can be ordered online by Friday, Aug. 29. Distribution of academic apparel will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the AMU 448.

The Inauguration Ceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. Doors will open at 2 p.m. A reception will follow at the Helfaer Recreation Center. Classes are cancelled beginning at 3 p.m. so faculty, staff and students can attend the Inauguration Ceremony.

All members of the Marquette community are also invited to the Inaugural Mass on Thursday, Sept. 18, but are reminded that seating inside Church of the Gesu is limited. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. Mass. Tickets are not required for the Mass.

3. ORSP hosting workshop on submitting to National Institutes of Health

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will host a workshop on how to submit a proposal to the National Institutes of Health on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the AMU 252 and Thursday, Sept. 11, from 11 a.m. to noon in the AMU 254. Key topics will include: an overview of grants.gov, how to access individual era commons accounts, submitting the application package, the general parts of an NIH submission, how to find past awardees and what ORSP can do to assist in submission preparation.

Anyone with an interest in NIH funding is welcome to attend. RSVP to Jennie Schatzman, office coordinator in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, by Friday, Sept. 5.

4. Ott Memorial Writing Center offers classroom visits

The Ott Memorial Writing Center offers five-to-10 minute, informational classroom visits throughout the semester. Some instructors prefer to have Writing Center staff visit at the start of the semester; others prefer a visit in the weeks before an assignment is due. In either case, the Writing Center will ask for details on the assignment(s) in order to tailor the presentation so students can make the best use of Writing Center resources.

5. Column marshals needed for Inauguration Ceremony

Staff members are needed to serve as column marshals for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center. Column marshals will guide the academic procession and stage party into the Al McGuire Center, and will escort them out after the ceremony. Marshals will also assist with guest seating and other onsite duties. Marshals need to arrive by 1 p.m. and will be needed for the duration of the ceremony, which should conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m.

6. Family Weekend is Oct. 3-5

Marquette will host Family Weekend Oct. 3-5, comprising three days of activities for students' families, including family-style meals, music and sporting events, trivia, bowling, a 5K fun run, theatre performances, tours of Milwaukee, apartment presentations and tours, worship opportunities, family photos, and Late Night events.

7. Rec Plex offering swim lessons this fall

The Rec Plex will offer swim lessons segmented into six levels, including a Tiny Tots/Wee Folks program and Adult Lessons. For lesson dates and times, see the online brochure. Sign-ups begin on Friday, Aug. 29. The cost is $40 for members and $46 for non-members.

8. Department of Recreational Sports offering Fit Pass

The Department of Recreational Sports will once again offer the Fit Pass for all members and students, as well as faculty and staff guests. The Fit Pass is $50 for the semester and the user may use the pass to gain entry to any group fitness class Recreational Sports offers at either the Rec Plex or the Rec Center. Recreational Sports is offering approximately 40 group fitness classes per week between the two facilities.

From Sept. 2-5, all group fitness classes will be free of charge to let users try classes before purchasing the Fit Pass. The schedule of classes is online. For more information, contact Shannon Bustillos, assistant director of Recreational Sports, at (414) 288-7778.

9. Adult volunteers needed for exercise science study

Adults with a family history of Alzheimer's disease are needed for exercise science research in the Department of Physical Therapy. Participants must be over the age of 60. Compensation will be provided.

This study has been approved by Marquette's Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects. For more information about research participant rights, contact the Office of Research Compliance at (414) 288-7570.
