1. Several summer maintenance and construction projects going on around campus

The Department of Facilities Services is leading maintenance and construction projects around campus this summer, which may affect parking and pedestrian walkways. A full list of summer projects is available online.

Major summer construction and maintenance projects include:

Classroom renovations

• Various classrooms throughout campus are being upgraded to Smart Classrooms.
  
  
• Wehr Physics 141 and 153 are receiving new lighting, seating and Smart Classroom AV improvements and card readers.
  
  
• Cramer Hall 104J is being upgraded to a Smart Classroom and the ceiling and lighting control system are being replaced.
  
  
• Wehr Chemistry 100 is receiving Smart Classroom upgrades, a new lighting control system, new carpeting and adjustments to the front demonstration area to improve sight lines to the boards and screens.
  
  
• Straz Hall 369 is receiving additional electrical outlets.

Historic Core renovations

• Sensenbrenner Hall: Landscaping and final site work is taking place this summer.
  
  
• Marquette Hall: Renovations continue on the lower level through the third floor, including the three large lecture halls. The fourth floor will be renovated this fall.
  
  
• Johnston Hall: The building is closed this summer so that the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology systems can be replaced. Possible interior space reconfigurations are being studied and a modest amount of interior renovations are expected to take place this summer.
  
  
• Coughlin Hall: Modifications are being made to the second and third floors to house the Educational Opportunity Program. Work on those floors will continue this fall.

Clark Hall lobby upgrades
The floor and ceiling in the Clark Hall lobby are being replaced this summer.

Schroeder Complex first floor upgrades
Upgrades to the floors, ceilings, walls and signage in the public spaces of the first floor of Schroeder Complex are planned.

Campus Grounds

• Sidewalks are being replaced in numerous areas around campus, including the east AMU entry, west of McCormick Hall, north of Helfaer Theatre and the Haggerty Museum of Art entry.
  
  
• Parking lots and structures are being upgraded, including Lots A, F, J and R.
  
  
• Beginning Monday, July 7, campus chilled water lines are being extended under Wisconsin Avenue and between Olin Engineering and the southeast corner of the AMU. The work is scheduled to be completed and restored by Friday, Aug. 15, weather permitting.

Al McGuire Center
The men's basketball practice locker room is being enhanced this summer. Acoustical improvements to the Kasten practice gym are planned, as well as improvements to the weight room.

Rec Plex
A range of upgrades are planned, including replacing flooring and lighting, painting walls and minor space adjustments. Due to maintenance, the bathrooms at the Rec Plex will be closed intermittently throughout the summer.

2. Attend Alumni Reunion Weekend on campus July 24-27

All faculty and staff are invited to reconnect with former students and classmates during Alumni Reunion Weekend, which will be held Thursday, July 24, to Sunday, July 27. This annual celebration features a variety of events for alumni, and will include affinity celebrations for the EOP 45th Anniversary and the Celebration of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Main events include:

• EOP 45th Anniversary Celebration Dinner and Dance: Friday, July 25, from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the AMU, Monaghan Ballroom – Join EOP alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends to celebrate this milestone anniversary.
  
  
• Block Party: Saturday, July 26, from noon to 4 p.m. on the Central Mall – Food, beverages and music will be provided at this pay-as-you-go event. There will also be activities for children.
  
  
• Marquette Fest: Saturday, July 26, from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in Westowne Square – Alumni from any class year are invited to this event. Each decade will have its own "decade-themed" cash bar and complimentary snacks, as well as music from the Boogie Men.

3. Celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola on July 31

The Marquette community is invited to celebrate the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola by attending Mass on Thursday, July 31, at noon in the AMU, Chapel of the Holy Family. A small luncheon reception will follow Mass. Register online.

4. Post Office in Union Station will be closed through July 9 for maintenance

The Post Office in Union Station will be closed from Monday, July 7, through Wednesday, July 9, due to maintenance work. MarquetteCard Services will be temporarily relocated to the AMU 157. Pre-paid/pre-stamped mail under 13 oz. and pre-paid UPS packages will be accepted in the AMU 157. All other services, including bus ticket and shipping supply sales, will be postponed until Union Station reopens.

5. SharePoint will be unavailable July 11-14 due to upgrade

SharePoint will be unavailable from noon Friday, July 11, until 7 a.m. Monday, July 14, as part of an upgrade to SharePoint 2013. The new SharePoint offers improved browser compatibility, updated Microsoft Office web applications that work on mobile devices, and a new interface for easier file uploading and editing for users. The simplified interface also makes managing a site easier for administrators.

6. Carillon music performance will be held on campus July 11

Mark Konewko, carillonneur and director of the Marquette University Chorus, will perform Music for Carillon No. 5 by John Cage, Friday, July 11, at 7 p.m. from the Paccard Carillon in the bell tower of Marquette Hall as part of a documentary. The best listening area will be the south or southwest side of Marquette Hall.

The piece Konewko is performing is unique because it is a graphic score, meaning the score is made up of black lines on plywood, using the grain of the plywood to suggest which bells are played.

7. Employee Wellness events offered in July

Employee Wellness will host a variety of events in July, including:

• Therapeutic yoga class: Drawing from the integrative yoga therapy approach to wellness, this class combines yoga with modern holistic, mind-body-spirit health practices. This class is ideal for beginners and intermediates looking to take time out of their busy schedules for relaxation and reconnection with themselves. The class format will be 45 minutes of yoga practice, including relaxation poses, followed by 10 minutes of optional meditation at the end of class. This four-week session will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Cramer 050, every Tuesday from July 8 to July 29.
  
  
• Healthy Cooking Series – Cooking With Kids: Junior chefs will learn table settings, tour the Marquette University kitchen and prepare their own meals. This class will be held Wednesday, July 23, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom. The class is open to children 5-12 years old. Register online.
  
  
• Fitness at Work: Employee Wellness will be offering 30-minute "Fitness At Work" demonstrations over the summer. Schedule a session by contacting Kristin Kipp, employee wellness coordinator, at (414) 288-5607.
  
  
• The Westown Farmers Market is open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Zeidler Union Square. Employees who would like to attend can meet at noon in the Zilber Hall lobby to walk together.
  
  
• Sign up to join the Marquette team for Briggs and Al's Run and the Milwaukee Heart Walk, which take place in September. Employee Wellness is also looking for employees to serve as team captains for the Milwaukee Heart Walk. Interested employees should contact Kipp at (414) 288-5607.

8. Ott Memorial Writing Center open during Summer Studies sessions

The Ott Memorial Writing Center, located in Raynor Memorial Libraries 240, is open to help all student writers this summer. Writing Center tutors work with writers at any stage of the writing process on any project, including course papers, lab reports, multimodal presentations, personal statements, research posters, and thesis and dissertation work.

The Writing Center is open for appointments Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the university's two six-week Summer Studies sessions.

Appointments can be scheduled in advance by calling (414) 288-5542 or using the Writing Center's online scheduling system. The Writing Center also accepts walk-ins when tutors are available.

9. TIAA-CREF representative on campus next week for confidential financial counseling

A TIAA-CREF consultant will be available to faculty and staff for individual, confidential financial counseling sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, in the AMU 231. Employees can discuss their personal financial situation with a TIAA-CREF consultant, as well as how to achieve financial goals by investing in financial solutions such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities.

10. Take advantage of on-campus summer dining options

There are four different places on campus to eat this summer. Each location offers unique menu options and hours:

• The Brew Bayou is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the AMU, first floor. It is a traditional coffee house offering Simply To Go carryout sandwiches, salads, bakery items and snacks.
  
  
• The Lunda Room is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the AMU, second floor. It is a casually elegant white tablecloth restaurant that offers a seasonal menu, as well as a soup and salad summer buffet. Cash, Marquette Cash and credit cards are accepted.
  
  
• McCormick Hall is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Menus vary daily and feature a made-to-order station, pizza and salad bar.
  
  
• Tory Hill Café is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Eckstein Hall, and offers soups, salads and sandwiches.

11. Female volunteers needed for clinical orthopedic study

Female volunteers are needed for a study examining the biomechanics of movements related to ACL injuries in active, young adult females. Individuals who qualify must be between the ages of 18 and 25, have normal lower extremity function and gait, no current lower extremity injuries, and no prior history of knee surgery. The research will be conducted at the MCW Center for Motion Analysis (CMA) in Greenfield, Wis.

This study has been approved by Marquette's Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects. For more information about research participant rights, contact the Office of Research Compliance at (414) 288-7570.
