1. Vice president and director of athletics search committee finalized; Henk to serve as chair

President Michael R. Lovell has appointed a search committee to recruit a new vice president and director of athletics. As President Lovell shared in his letter to the campus community on July 1, the committee will be chaired by Dr. William Henk, dean of the College of Education. Henk has served as dean and professor of literacy at Marquette since 2004. In addition to his national reputation in reading, literacy and language studies, Henk is a member of the University Academic Senate and University Leadership Council. He was a student-athlete in his undergraduate days, playing basketball at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania.

The university has retained the executive search firm Korn Ferry to lead the process and assist in identifying and recruiting the best candidates.

"We look forward to finding a leader who represents all the values we aspire to at Marquette," President Lovell said. "Our search committee and partnering search firm have already been actively seeking input across campus to determine the most important attributes of the next leader of our student athletes."

The new vice president and director of athletics is expected to be named by the end of the fall 2014 semester. The search committee and the Office of the President have launched a dedicated website and will post news about meetings and progress. To nominate candidates, email MarquetteAD@KornFerry.com.

The search committee is as follows:

Dr. William Henk (chair) – Dean of the College of Education
Dr. Sarah Bonewits Feldner – Associate professor of communication studies
Dr. Richard Jones – Professor of social and cultural sciences and NCAA faculty athletics representative
Danielle Josetti – Associate athletics director, compliance

2. Prestigious National Science Foundation award honors junior faculty teacher-scholar

Dr. Marta Magiera, assistant professor of mathematics, statistics and computer science, is the recipient of a $792,000 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation. The award will support her research on effective ways to build a knowledge foundation in mathematics teacher preparation, specifically focusing on mathematical argumentation.

The competitive five-year grant is one of the NSF's most prestigious awards, which honors junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholar through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

"The National Science Foundation's Career Award is the gold standard for recognizing and supporting young scholars who are able to integrate excellence in research and education in science and engineering disciplines," said Dr. Jeanne Hossenlopp, vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School.

3. Health risk assessment forms for primary care providers now available

The primary care provider form for employees planning to see their primary care provider during this fall's two-part health risk assessment are now available online. Employees who complete the HRA process will receive a discount for 2015 health insurance premiums.

There are two parts of the HRA process. The first step is a biometric screening, which is completed by the employee's primary care provider or at a screening provided on campus. Biometric screenings for employees seeing their primary care provider must fall between Tuesday, July 1, and Friday, Nov. 21, 2014. Dates for on-campus screenings will be announced in early fall, with appointments beginning in late October and running through mid-November. The second step of the HRA is to complete an online questionnaire, which will be available in late October.

All employees and their spouses or same-sex domestic partners are eligible to participate in the HRA process, although the Marquette employee must participate in order to receive the 10-percent insurance discount. Spouse and same-sex domestic partner participation is not mandatory for the discount but is encouraged, as an HRA can help determine risk factors for chronic diseases and identify how to make healthier choices. The cost for both employee and spouse or same-sex domestic partner assessments is paid by the university.

The university's annual enrollment period for 2015 benefit elections will run from Monday, Oct. 27, through Friday, Nov. 14, 2014.
