1. Presidential Inauguration theme set, events posted online

Inauguration events for President Michael R. Lovell will offer the Marquette community a full range of opportunities to warmly welcome our 24th president to campus through worship, reflection and celebration. The Inauguration will celebrate Marquette's Catholic, Jesuit faith tradition and 133-year history of academic excellence in service to others while showcasing the innovative spirit of discovery and exploration that will lift Marquette to ever greater heights.

The theme of the Inauguration — Ignited in faith. Alive in inquiry. Forward in service. — was developed by the Inaugural Steering and Planning Committees, and is inspired by the university's rich tradition of excellence, faith, leadership and service, as well as its commitment to extending knowledge beyond existing boundaries in pursuit of solutions for pressing problems and answers to life's deepest questions.

Inauguration events are planned for Sept. 13-20. The Inaugural Mass will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. in Church of the Gesu. A reception for the Marquette community will follow from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Eckstein Hall.

The Inauguration Ceremony will be held Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center, followed by a reception for the Marquette community from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Helfaer Recreational Center. Tickets are required for the Inauguration Ceremony. One ticket per Marquette ID can be picked up in the AMU, Brooks Lounge, beginning Monday, Aug. 25. As previously announced, the Office of the Provost, in collaboration with University Academic Senate and the deans, will cancel classes beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, so that all students and faculty have the opportunity to attend the Inauguration Ceremony. Please note that classes will not be canceled the entire day. The Inauguration Ceremony will be webcast live on the Inauguration website for members of the Marquette community who are unable to attend.

2. Fundraising goal surpassed for fiscal year 2014

University Advancement exceeded its $50.4 million fundraising goal for fiscal year 2014 by nearly $10 million, raising a total of $60.7 million. The amount raised is nearly 30-percent higher than the fiscal year 2013 total of $47 million and $10 million more than was raised in 2012. Included in this year's total are nine gifts in excess of $1 million, a marked increase over just three gifts of $1 million or more received in 2013. Fundraising was successfully completed for two significant university priorities – the Dental School expansion and the new Jesuit Residence – and 39 new scholarships were created. In all, nearly 28,000 benefactors invested in 850 different university funds. Annual giving was also above goal at $11 million, including a record high $4.3 million to the Blue & Gold Fund.

3. Marquette community invited to Jesuit Residence groundbreaking Aug. 15

President Michael R. Lovell recently announced plans to break ground on a new Jesuit Residence, which will include a celebration for the Marquette community Friday, Aug. 15, at 10:30 a.m. The celebration will take place in the 1400 block of West Wells Street between Schroeder Hall and the AMU.

At 10:30 a.m., a short program will take place, including remarks from President Lovell; Rev. Jeffrey LaBelle, S.J., rector of the Jesuit community; and Rev. Thomas Lawler, S.J., provincial of the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus. After the program, all guests are invited for light refreshments in the Stuessi Gardens in the current Jesuit Residence. Please RSVP to University Special Events at (414) 288-7431 by Friday, Aug. 8.

4. Dr. Marilyn Frenn inducted into prestigious nursing academy

Dr. Marilyn Frenn, professor of nursing, was recently named to the American Academy of Nursing Fellows. Frenn is one of 168 nurse leaders selected to join the Academy's Class of 2014 based on their leadership in education, management, policy and work toward improving the health of the nation. Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing is highly selective and is considered the highest honor in the nursing profession. The induction ceremony will take place at the academy's Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference on Oct. 18 in Washington, D.C.

Frenn specializes in obesity prevention in youth, nursing education and health policy. She is a fellow in The Obesity Society and The Academy of Nursing Education. She serves as governor at large of the National League for Nursing and is a member of the Minnesota Geriatric Education Center Advisory Board and the International Society of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity. During the 2013–14 academic year, Frenn served as chair of the Marquette University Academic Senate.

5. Faculty encouraged to register fall service learning courses, apply for Problem Solver Seed Grants

Faculty who plan to integrate service learning into their courses for the fall 2014 semester are asked to register with the Center for Teaching and Learning Service Learning Program by completing a short survey. Additionally, the Center for Teaching and Learning Service Learning Program offers Problem Solver Seed Grants for faculty and community partner teams interested in creating innovative service learning opportunities. More information about the mini grants and the application can be found online.

6. Child Care Center will celebrate 25th anniversary with event Aug. 9

The William and Evelyn Krueger Child Care Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary with an event Saturday, Aug. 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Krueger Child Care Center. Complimentary food and beverages will be available.

7. TIAA-CREF representative on campus this week for confidential financial counseling

A TIAA-CREF consultant will be available to faculty and staff for individual, confidential financial counseling sessions from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, in the AMU 231, and Wednesday, July 30, in the AMU 233. Employees can discuss their personal financial situation with a TIAA-CREF consultant, as well as how to achieve financial goals by investing in financial solutions such as mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities.

9. Marquette Sports Rehabilitation clinic offers summer hours

The Marquette Sports Rehabilitation Clinic, located in Cramer Hall 215, is a full-service rehabilitation and sports medicine clinic based in the College of Health Sciences' Physical Therapy department. In addition to its range of physical therapy services, the clinic offers free injury screenings by expert physical therapists and athletic trainers.

Summer clinic hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Injury screenings are by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling (414) 288-1400.

10. Female volunteers needed for clinical orthopedic study

Female volunteers are needed for a study examining the biomechanics of movements related to ACL injuries in active, young adult females. Individuals who qualify must be between the ages of 18 and 25, have normal lower extremity function and gait, no current lower extremity injuries, and no prior history of knee surgery. The research will be conducted at the MCW Center for Motion Analysis in Greenfield, Wis.

This study has been approved by Marquette's Institutional Review Board for the protection of human subjects. For more information about research participant rights, contact the Office of Research Compliance at (414) 288-7570.

11. Take advantage of on-campus summer dining options

There are four different places on campus to eat this summer. Each location offers unique menu options and hours:

• The Brew Bayou is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the AMU, first floor. It is a traditional coffee house offering Simply To Go carryout sandwiches, salads, bakery items and snacks.
  
  
• The Lunda Room is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the AMU, second floor. It is a casually elegant white tablecloth restaurant that offers a seasonal menu, as well as a soup and salad summer buffet. Cash, Marquette Cash and credit cards are accepted.
  
  
• McCormick Hall is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Menus vary daily and feature a made-to-order station, pizza and salad bar.
  
  
• Tory Hill Café is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Eckstein Hall, and offers soups, salads and sandwiches.
