1. President-elect Lovell to work closely with Father Wild during June; will begin full-time role July 1

President-elect Lovell will be on campus beginning Monday, June 2, to work closely with Interim President Robert A. Wild, S.J., and to meet with university leaders. He will begin his full-time presidential role on July 1. Father Wild will continue to work part-time at Marquette in University Advancement, fundraising and maintaining the long-standing relationships he has with alumni and friends of the university.

The Inauguration of President-elect Lovell will be held Thursday and Friday, Sept. 18 and 19, 2014. Mass will take place Thursday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. at Church of the Gesu, with the inauguration ceremony following on Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. A reception for the Marquette community and guests will follow Friday's inauguration ceremony. The Office of the Provost, in collaboration with University Academic Senate and the deans, will cancel classes beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, so that all students and faculty have the opportunity to attend the inauguration ceremony. Please note that classes are not canceled for the entire day.

2. Ott Memorial Writing Center open during Summer Studies sessions

The Ott Memorial Writing Center, located in Raynor Memorial Libraries, 240, is open to help all student writers this summer. Writing Center tutors work with writers at any stage of the writing process on any project, including course papers, lab reports, multimodal presentations, personal statements, research posters, and thesis and dissertation work.

The Writing Center is open for appointments Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout the university's two six-week Summer Studies sessions.

Appointments can be scheduled in advance by calling (414) 288-5542 or using the Writing Center's online scheduling system. The Writing Center also accepts walk-ins when tutors are available.

3. Workshop on Software Defined Networking is June 5

Marquette and Hewlett-Packard will host "Software Defined Networking: Next Generation Networking," Thursday, June 5, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Cudahy, 001. This free workshop will include discussions and demonstrations on Software Defined Networking, which was developed at Stanford University to deliver easier to manage, scalable and highly orchestrated networks. SDN experts will lead discussions and demonstrations on production-ready networking solutions.

4. Law School to host conference on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's legacy in post-World War II constitution-building efforts

The Law School will host a one-day conference titled "MacArthur and Beyond: Challenges of Externally-imposed Constitutions in the Aftermath of War – The Lessons of Yesterday for the World of Tomorrow," Friday, June 6, beginning at 9 a.m. in Eckstein Hall.

The conference will address constitution-building across time and geography, with a focus on the influence Gen. Douglas MacArthur had in several nations during the aftermath of World War II.

The conference is organized by Marquette Law Professor Peter K. Rofes and Charles C. Mulcahy, a 1962 Law School graduate. It is one of several events included in MacArthur Memorial Week, which is being held in Milwaukee June 3-7 to mark the 50th anniversary of MacArthur's death and the 35th anniversary of the dedication of a statue in his honor. MacArthur, whose family has deep roots in the Milwaukee area, received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Marquette in 1951.

There is no cost to attend the conference but registration is required and can be completed online.

5. Philosophy Department to host international conference on philosophy of Ernst Cassirer

The Department of Philosophy will host "The Philosophy of Ernst Cassirer: A Novel Assessment," Wednesday, June 18, in the AMU, Monaghan Ballroom CD, and Thursday, June 19, to Saturday, June 21, in Raynor Memorial Libraries' Beaumier Suites B and C. Guests from the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, England and Belgium will speak on the philosophy of Cassirer in North America. A complete list of speakers can be found online.

6. Submit abstracts for International Conference on Caribbean Studies by July 31

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will host the fourth International Conference on Caribbean Studies, "Looking to the Caribbean: Gender and Cultural Studies," November 6-8 on campus. Graduate students and faculty members are encouraged to submit abstracts for consideration by July 31.

7. University mourns the deaths of Drs. Gregory Porter and Charles Post

Marquette University mourns the death of Dr. Gregory Porter, former associate professor of broadcast and electronic communication in the Diederich College of Communication, who died May 20. Porter taught at Marquette for 26 years before retiring in 2007. Private memorial services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hunger Task Force, the University of Iowa, Wright State University, Northmont High School, Cream City Foundation, ACLU Foundation or the Human Rights Campaign. Please remember Porter, his family and friends in prayer.

Marquette University mourns the death of Dr. Charles "Chuck" Post, a former faculty member in the School of Dentistry. Post also served as a pediatric dentist at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for 34 years. Memorial services took place over the weekend. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Next Door Foundation or the House of Peace. Please remember Post, his family and friends in prayer.

8. Marquette Sports Rehabilitation clinic offers summer hours

The Marquette Sports Rehabilitation Clinic, located in Cramer Hall, 215, is a full-service rehabilitation and sports medicine clinic based in the College of Health Sciences' Physical Therapy department. In addition to its range of physical therapy services, the clinic offers free injury screenings by expert physical therapists and athletic trainers.

Summer clinic hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Injury screenings are by appointment only and can be scheduled by calling (414) 288-1400.
