1. Limited supply of Inauguration Ceremony tickets still available in AMU Brooks Lounge

A limited supply of tickets is still available for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is available for pick-up in the AMU Brooks Lounge during normal business hours. The "Gold out" T-shirts sponsored by MUSG are gone, but the first 500 students who picked them up with their ticket should wear their T-shirt to the Inauguration Ceremony. Students can pick up one ticket per Marquette ID. Brooks Lounge hours can be found on the Inauguration website.

The Inauguration Ceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. Doors will open at 2 p.m. There will be limited VIP seating for students. A reception will follow at the Helfaer Recreation Center. Classes are cancelled beginning at 3 p.m. so faculty, staff and students can attend the Inauguration Ceremony. All members of the Marquette community are also invited to the Inaugural Mass on Thursday, Sept. 18, but are reminded that seating inside Church of the Gesu is limited. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. Mass. Tickets are not required for the Mass.

In addition to the Inaugural Mass and Inauguration Ceremony, a variety of free, student-centered Inauguration events with President Lovell are taking place Sept. 13-20, including:

  • Participate in Al's Run with President Lovell, Head Men's Basketball Coach Steve Wojciechowski and Head Women's Basketball Coach Carolyn Kieger, Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m.
  • Inaugural Ball, Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 p.m. to midnight in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom
  • Interfaith Prayer Service, Sunday, Sept. 14, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Westowne Square – Campus Ministry is sponsoring an opportunity for people of all faith backgrounds to share in prayer. RSVP to University Special Events.
  • Sign a welcome banner for President Lovell throughout Inauguration week in the AMU second floor lobby
  • Dinner in Cobeen Hall, Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Hot Cookie Night at McCormick Hall, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Residence Hall Association Carnival, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Westowne Square
  • Men's soccer game vs. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7:05 p.m. at Valley Fields
  • Glow BINGO, Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. – Join President Lovell and Mrs. Amy Lovell for glow-in-the-dark BINGO to support her charity, REDGen, a community action group committed to promoting balance and resiliency in the lives of youth and families. This event is sponsored by Active Minds, Marquette's student group dedicated to mental health awareness, the Residence Hall Association, the Counseling Center and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Prizes will include a dinner with the Lovell family.
  • Inauguration Music Festival, Saturday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m. on the Central Mall

2. Good Money Challenge now accepting applications

The Social Innovation Initiative is accepting applications for the 2014 Good Money Challenge, which offers $25,000 in funding. The event is open to anyone with an idea or business plan that creates a social or environmental impact.

3. Free T-shirt for students who volunteer during Inauguration Week

Interested students can sign in to Marquette Involvement Link and then sign up to volunteer their time and talents during Inauguration Week. All student volunteers will be trained on their respective duties and will receive a free Inauguration volunteer T-shirt.

4. Register for Al's Run to kick off Inauguration Week with President Lovell; race packets available for pick-up

Registration is still open for Briggs & Al's Run & Walk for Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10:30 a.m. More than 16,000 participants, including President Michael R. Lovell and Head Men's Basketball Coach Steve Wojciechowski and Head Women's Basketball Coach Carolyn Kieger are expected to line up on Marquette's campus for an 8K run and 3- and 5-mile walks to help make a difference in the lives of children from across Wisconsin. The event was founded by former Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire and has raised more than $14 million for the hospital to fund medical care, research and education.

The race starts at 12th Street and Wisconsin Avenue and continues to Lake Michigan near the Summerfest grounds. There is a $25 registration fee for walkers and a $30 registration fee for runners. Register online as an individual or with a Marquette team. For those who registered to be a part of the Marquette team before Aug. 27, race packets are available for pick-up in the Event Management Office, located in the AMU 245, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Individuals who need to pick up their packets outside of those hours can ask the Information Desk to retrieve their packet Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11:45 p.m.

For those who registered to join the Marquette team after Aug. 27, race packets will be available the morning of the race at the Information Tent, located at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and 16th Street.

5. Soup with Substance to discuss summer trip to Ethiopia

Marquette students and faculty will lead a discussion about their summer trip to Ethiopia at a Soup with Substance event Wednesday, Sept. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. in AMU 157. Over the summer, the group visited Catholic Relief Services programs in Ethiopia promoting education, micro-finance, water and sanitation, public health, and agriculture. They will share their experiences and discuss next year's trip.

6. Marquette to host nutrition and health conference Oct. 17

Marquette University will host a Community Nutrition and Health Conference, Friday, Oct. 17, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., in AMU 227. This conference is co-sponsored by Medical College of Wisconsin, the Institute for Urban Agriculture and Nutrition, and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin, and is intended to bring together researchers and community members interested in improving nutritional intake and the health of people in Southeast Wisconsin through intra-disciplinary and intra-institutional collaborations.

7. Holocaust scholar Berenbaum goes "On the Issues" at Law School

Dr. Michael Berenbaum, director of the American Jewish University's Sigi Ziering Institute, will be the featured guest for an upcoming "On the Issues with Mike Gousha," Thursday, Sept. 11, 4:30 p.m. at Eckstein Hall.

One of the world's leading authorities on the Holocaust, Berenbaum has written 21 books and scores of scholarly and journalistic articles. Also a noted lecturer and teacher, he played an instrumental role in the creation of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and has worked on several award-winning films and television broadcasts. Berenbaum's written work includes an examination of the relationship between Jews and Catholics in the post-Holocaust period.

8. Free wellness classes available for students

Marquette University Medical Clinic offers free wellness classes for students. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 8, and continue through Thursday, Dec. 4. The classes include: Mindfulness Meditation, Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Tao-Well, Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Yoga, Mondays from 5 p.m. to 6 .p.m., Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. The complete schedule and class descriptions are available online.

9. Department of Recreational Sports offering Fit Pass

The Department of Recreational Sports will once again offer the Fit Pass for all members and students, as well as faculty and staff guests. The Fit Pass is $50 for the semester and the user may use the pass to gain entry to any group fitness class Recreational Sports offers at either the Rec Plex or the Rec Center. Recreational Sports is offering approximately 40 group fitness classes per week between the two facilities.
