1. Inauguration events with President Lovell continue this week with dinner, hot cookie night, carnival, GLOW Bingo and Inaugural Mass

Inauguration Week events celebrating the university's 24th president, Dr. Michael R. Lovell, continue this week with dinner in Cobeen Hall with President Lovell, Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; hot cookie night at McCormick Hall, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; a Residence Hall Association Carnival, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Westowne Square; and Glow BINGO, Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

A limited supply of tickets is still available for the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is available for pick-up in the AMU Brooks Lounge during normal business hours, which can be found on the Inauguration website. Students can pick up one ticket per Marquette ID. The "Gold out" T-shirts sponsored by MUSG are gone, but the first 500 students who picked them up with their ticket should wear their T-shirt to the Inauguration Ceremony. The Inauguration Ceremony will take place Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. Doors will open at 2 p.m. Classes are cancelled beginning at 3 p.m. so faculty, staff and students can attend the Inauguration Ceremony. A reception will follow at the Helfaer Recreation Center.

All members of the Marquette community are invited to the Inaugural Mass on Thursday, Sept. 18, but are reminded that seating inside Church of the Gesu is limited. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. Mass. Tickets are not required for the Mass.

In addition to the Inaugural Mass and Inauguration Ceremony, a variety of free, student-centered Inauguration events with President Lovell are taking place Sept. 13-20, including:

• Sign a welcome banner for President Lovell throughout Inauguration Week in the AMU second floor lobby
• Dinner in Cobeen Hall, Monday, Sept. 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Hot Cookie Night at McCormick Hall, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
• Residence Hall Association Carnival, Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Westowne Square
• Men's soccer game vs. University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7:05 p.m. at Valley Fields
• Glow BINGO, Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. - Join Mrs. Amy Lovell for glow-in-the-dark BINGO to support her charity, REDGen, a community action group committed to promoting balance and resiliency in the lives of youth and families. This event is sponsored by Active Minds, Marquette's student group dedicated to mental health awareness, the Residence Hall Association and the Counseling Center.
• Inauguration Music Festival, Saturday, Sept. 20, at 9 p.m. on the Central Mall

2. Parking changes requested for Lot F and Wells Street Parking Structure parkers on Friday, Sept. 19, for Inauguration Ceremony

To provide convenient parking and make way for the many invited guests that will be coming to campus Friday, Sept. 19, for the Inauguration Ceremony of President Michael R. Lovell, several parking changes are being requested by Parking Services:

• Lot F parkers are being asked to relocate to the 16th Street Parking Structure. Gate cards for Lot F have been given swipe access into the structure from either the 16th or 17th Street entrances.
  
  
• Wells Street Parking Structure employee and commuter student parkers are being asked to park on the top five levels of the structure.

The cooperation of the entire campus community in making the Inauguration Ceremony a success is deeply appreciated.

3. Provost search listening sessions will be held Sept. 22

The following campus listening sessions will be hosted by the provost search committee and representatives from Isaacson, Miller on Monday, Sept. 22:

• Division of Student Affairs – 10 a.m. in AMU 227
• Staff in the academic division – noon in AMU 157
• Faculty – 4 p.m. in AMU 227
• Students – 5:30 p.m. in Raynor Memorial Libraries Beaumier Suites BC

Candidate nominations can be submitted via the Isaacson, Miller website. Initial screening of candidates by the search committee will begin in October.

4. Campus climate study website launched as part of comprehensive diversity plan

Marquette is participating in a campus climate survey to support the theme of Enhancement of Organizational Effectiveness from the university's strategic plan, Beyond Boundaries, which was approved by the Board of Trustees in May 2013.

A website that provides background and information regarding the campus climate study is now available. The site features a FAQ, information regarding the survey and consulting firm, and a timeline highlighting major phases of the study. During the fall 2014 semester, focus groups will co-develop questions for a campus wide survey set to launch spring 2015. In order for the survey to be fully representative and useful to the university, everyone's participation in the survey is essential. Watch upcoming News Briefs for additional information.

5. Complete online form to request a lunch with President Lovell

Students interested in attending lunch with President Michael R. Lovell can complete an online form on the Division of Student Affairs website. Lunches will be held Sept. 26, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19. Dates will be chosen based on the order in which the request is received. Completing the request form does not guarantee selection for a lunch with President Lovell, as his availability is limited.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs will review all requests and follow up with interested students to confirm whether they have been selected to attend a lunch with President Lovell.

6. College Republicans to host Lieutenant Colonel Allen West tonight

Marquette College Republicans will host Lieutenant Colonel Allen West, Fox News contributor and former U.S. Representative, for a lecture Monday, Sept. 15, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom A. Lt. Col. West will speak on the topic of the economy in relation to jobs, small businesses and workforce development.

After a 22-year military career, Lt. Col. West went on to teach high school and was a civilian military adviser to the Afghan army. In 2010, he was elected to the United States Congress and served as the representative to Florida's 22nd district.

7. Families invited to campus for Family Weekend, Oct. 3-5

Family Weekend, Oct. 3-5, is an opportunity for students to bring their families to campus and celebrate all that makes the Marquette experience unlike any other. Family Weekend is three days of events for the whole family, including family-style meals, music and sporting events, trivia, bowling, a 5K fun run, theatre performances, tours of Milwaukee, apartment presentations and tours, worship opportunities, family photos, and Late Night events.

8. LGBTQ and allied community Mass will be held Sept. 17

Campus Ministry will host a LGBTQ and allied community Mass on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. in the St. Joan of Arc Chapel. This monthly Mass will also be offered on the following dates: Oct. 22, Nov. 19, Jan. 28, Feb. 25, March 18 and April 15.

9. Several departments and centers hosting colloquia this week

The Integrative Neuroscience Research Center in the College of Health Sciences will host "Understanding Disease Risk from Sleep Deficiency" Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in Schroeder Complex 256. Dr. Carol Everson of the Department of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin will lead the seminar. A full list of INRC seminars is available online. 

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will host a "Meet the Faculty" colloquium Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. in Olin Engineering 202. The lecture is free and open to the public. The Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology will host a colloquium, "But My Client Needs to Change! Strengthening Your Non-Judgmental Position," Wednesday, Sept. 17, from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the AMU 227. The Department of Social and Cultural Sciences will host a colloquium Friday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in Lalumiere 177 on Associate Professor of Sociology Dawne Moon's recent work. Moon will present preliminary findings and early conceptualizations of her preliminary findings about reconciliation between conservative Christians and LGBT individuals. 10. Charles Franklin goes "On the Issues" to present new Marquette Law School poll

Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette Law School Poll, will unveil a new round of poll results in an upcoming "On the Issues with Mike Gousha," Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Eckstein Hall.

Franklin and Gousha will present a live look inside the numbers of the sixth Marquette Law School Poll of the 2014 election year, examining public views on the Wisconsin gubernatorial and attorney general campaigns, plus other key issues as the countdown to the November election continues.

After four months of deadlocked polling, how are the candidates' images shifting? Have ad campaigns, the recent release of documents in the John Doe case or other events moved public opinion? In the race for attorney general, how successfully are the candidates introducing themselves to voters? The poll also will measure public perception of job creation, the state budget and other policy positions.

11. Haggerty Museum hosting book signing with Milwaukee-based Lake Michigan photographer

The Haggerty Museum recently commissioned Milwaukee-based photographer Kevin J. Miyazaki to create artwork reflecting on the importance of fresh water. Miyazaki consequently embarked on a two-week, 1,800-mile drive around Lake Michigan to produce what he calls "a contemporary portrait of Lake Michigan."

The "Perimeter" project is now documented in a new book, Perimeter: A Contemporary Portrait of Lake Michigan, published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. To celebrate the release of the book, the Haggerty Museum will host a book signing and reception with Miyazaki on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Haggerty Museum. 12. Marquette Theatre presents Thornton Wilder's Our Town

Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer prize-winning drama Our Town will be presented by Marquette Theatre this fall. Set in the small New England town of Grover's Corners in 1901, Our Town returns to the Helfaer stage after 25 years. The story of Emily and George is both charming and heartbreaking while discovering the profound greatness in life's simple moments. Individuals will rediscover this American classic that explores the universal need to find a place to belong and the challenge of appreciating life.

The play will run during the following dates:

• Thursday Sept. 25, and Friday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m.
• Saturday, Sept. 27, at 2:30 p.m. (will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Helfaer Theatre)
• Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m.
• Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2:30 p.m.

13. Gender and Sexuality Resource Center launching new student volunteer program

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center is launching a new Volunteer Program for students this fall. The program will provide students with the chance to volunteer and explore issues focused on women and gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, sexual assault prevention and intersections of identity. Interested students should attend one of the following information sessions in the AMU 425:

• Thursday, Sept. 18, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
• Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
• Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

14. Student chapter of National Dental Association to host second annual Oral Cancer Walk this weekend

The Marquette School of Dentistry's student chapter of the National Dental Association will host its second annual Oral Cancer 3K Walk and 5K Run, Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10:15 a.m. beginning at the Olin overhang. General registration is $25, registration for children 10 and under is $10, and registration for oral cancer survivors and fighters is free.

Approximately 46,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2014, which includes tongue and throat cancer. When found early, there is an 80– to 90-percent survival rate; however, because of a lack of public awareness, the majority of cases are unfortunately discovered in a late stage, which often proves to be fatal. In a continuing effort to increase awareness of oral cancer and the importance of early detection, free oral cancer screenings will be performed by community dentists the day of the event from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for all race participants.

A free continuing education course on oral cancer diagnosis, treatment and the importance of early detection will be offered, Saturday, Sept. 20, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the School of Dentistry. The course is free with registration for the run/walk.

15. Marquette buildings will be a part of Doors Open Milwaukee

Doors Open Milwaukee will provide tours of two campus buildings Saturday, Sept. 20, and Sunday, Sept. 21. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the St. Joan of Arc Chapel and the Law School. Tours of the chapel will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Law School will be open for tours Saturday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free parking will be available in the 16th Street and Wells Street parking structures.

16. "Almost everything $6" sale to benefit Physical Therapy Scholarship fund

The "almost everything $6" sale will be held Monday, Sept. 15, and Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the AMU, second floor lobby. This sale features gifts, jewelry and accessories, with 20-percent of the sale proceeds going to the Physical Therapy Faculty Student Scholarship Fund. The sale will include both licensed merchandise greater than $6 and specials under $6.

Marquette Cash and credit cards are accepted. Those interested in making a contribution to the scholarship fund to assist graduate students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program can contact Kathleen Ludington, director of development for the College of Health Sciences, at (414) 288-1410.

17. Spanish Mass offered at Gesu Church every third Sunday of the month

The Church of the Gesu offers Mass in Spanish at 1:30 p.m. on the third Sunday of each month, beginning Sunday, Sept. 21.
