Mission Week 2015: Daily Reflection

Each day of Mission Week, a member of the Marquette community will offer a reflection to echo the theme of Mission Week 2015, “Who Cares? Charity, Justice, and the Common Good.”

Marquette’s mission provides a necessary strong baseline of care and outreach that supports the work I do (McNair Scholars Program) to assist low-income, first-generation, underrepresented students enter and complete Ph.D. programs, and return to college campuses to educate the next generation. Marquette's focus on academic excellence in the context of service to others, as well, greatly enhances my program's mission of preparing eligible students for graduate school.

By making tandem a love of knowledge and holistic growth of individuals with an outreach to those in need, Marquette cares about the tangible, day-to-day lives of people. The university, in this vein, provides opportunity for staff and faculty to work together to enhance teaching and learning as a community.

Marquette can continue its stance of charity and justice by increasing support of established campus programs that directly minister to those in need and those affected by deprivation and lack of opportunity--Educational Opportunity Program, Freshman Frontier Program, etc.

It seems to me that a Jesuit university establishes its purpose and worth most effectively through the improvements it affects in the lives of others — spiritual, physical, social, communal, economic.
