The Simulation Technology and Learning Resource Center at Marquette University College of Nursing was established in 1982 to facilitate students in their search for quality information for school and college academic projects.

The center includes both a simulated hospital lab with 5 beds, as well as a print-ready computer lab utilizing Microsoft Office 2007. The computer lab is loaded with interactive CD-ROM programs and practice NCLEX exams. We provide high-speed wireless Internet access, study carrels and private study rooms. A variety of standard office equipment is also available.

Our clinical lab contains 12 beds with bedside tables, sinks and other amenities available in hospitals. We have teaching stethoscopes, oto/ophthalmoscopes and other equipment that promote both critical thinking and hands-on nursing education.

Our newest acquisition is the simulated mannequin known as SimMan, an interactive mannequin that is computer controlled and programmed to react as a real patient and be manipulated by the instructor. Scenarios allow students to hone their skills and critically analyze symptoms in a non-threatening environment. SimMan can react to a wide range of scenarios, from basic sophomore skills to more complex situations for our nurse practitioner programs.

Although SimMan offers students a close-to-real hospital experience, Marquette University College of Nursing continues to provide seven off-site clinical hands-on specialties: OB; mental health; pediatric/family; adult; acutely ill adult; and community health clinicals. Beginning as early as sophomore year, students complete their foundational nursing techniques and assessments in the College of Nursing lab. Practice days and times are readily available for students at all levels. As beneficial as SimMan is to students' skill building, it does not eliminate the need for hospital-based experiences. At Marquette University College of Nursing, we pride ourselves on the depth and amount of hands-on, real-patient interactions our students experience. We firmly believe that the human interaction between faculty-supported students and patients provides our students with the best practice techniques, holistic nursing care and critical thinking skills that we demand and expect from our graduates.

Marquette University College of Nursing continually uses current technology, yet maintains a caring, human approach to nursing care. Interacting with various disciplines, and utilizing a variety of learning tools in the Simulation Technology and Learning Resource Center allows our students to become an exemplary BSN, RN.
