Professional Education


The Institute accomplishes much on the educational front to promote end-of-life care among nursing students and health care professionals. To date, the Institute has:

Developed Death and Dying Course. The course is open to all students at Marquette University.

  • Developed a continuing education module within the Death and Dying course entitled Grief Work.
  • Hosted presentations at regional and local conferences, including the Good Death presentation delivered at the spring 2003 Sinai Annual Geriatric Conference in Milwaukee.
  • Developed and presented education sessions from 2003 to the present at the annual End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) sponsored by Aurora Health Care.
  • Hosted three colloquia featuring nationally recognized experts in end-of-life care. Speakers and event dates included:
      • William Lamers,MD, a medical consultant with the Hospice Association of America (April 2003);
      • Ardith Doorenbos,PhD, RN, a post-doctoral fellow at Michigan Sate University specializing in end-of-life care (April 2004); and
      • Karin T. Kirchhoff, PhD, RN, FAAN, Rodefer Chair and Professor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, national expert of end-of-life care (May 2005).
  • Developed core curriculum on culture and end-of-life care for nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses and advanced practice nurse who are affiliated with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Organization.
Nursing faculty, Maureen O'Brien, PhD, RN, Clinical Associate Professor completed End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)in pediatric nursing.
