Building on the success of Phase I, WNRP-II began in July 2007. Driven by the overarching purpose to produce a more comprehensive and seamless model that supports new graduates’ transition into practice, the second phase is primarily focused on building nurse preceptors’ role efficacy. In conjunction with WNRP-I elements, this provides new graduates with a more dynamic and long-term support system that better meets their development needs from point of hire through the first 18 months of practice, as illustrated in the following model.
Preceptors play a pivotal role in the building of clinical competency of new graduate nurses. These workshops focus on empowering preceptors to effectively engage in their role and provide them with tools to use in real-time practice. A unique aspect of this training is that it is highly interactive, using simulation learning, which allows preceptors to practice skills and translate them to the clinical unit. These workshops are offered at project partners’ hospitals located throughout Wisconsin.
