Jesuit recognized for aid in Salvadoran Civil War passes away

Jesuit Father Dean Brackley, widely recognized for volunteering to take the place of faculty members at Central American University slain during El Salvador’s civil war, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 23 at the age of 65 from a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Brackley’s life exemplified the heart of Marquette University’s mission, and he was presented an Honorary Doctorate of Religious Studies from Marquette during the Presidential Inauguration on September 23.

Since 1989, Brackley’s presence in El Salvador was invaluable in gaining awareness and solidarity between churches and universities in the U.S. and the poor in Central America. He educated thousands of church delegations from the U.S. and Europe on the realities of Latin America, which helped shape sister parishes and other advocacy groups. His initiatives influenced change in U.S. policy in the region at the conclusion of the 12-year civil war with peace accords in 1992.

Marquette students and alumni connect internationally

Marquette University Alumni Association and the Office of International Education have been working together to tap into a growing network of alumni living and working across the globe. This year the Marquette Club of London led by Belton Flournoy, 2003 graduate of the College of Business Administration, and the Marquette Club of Europe led by Kelly Kliebhan, 1999 graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences, joined forces as the European Alumni Network (EAN).

The European Alumni Network’s goals are to enhance community among those connected to Marquette while re-connecting alumni who might have lost contact with Marquette during the move to Europe. “As the world is becoming more global, so is Marquette,” Flournoy said. “It is important to develop a strong European alumni program to support our growth worldwide.”

The Marquette EAN hosted its annual reception for alumni, friends and current students studying abroad in Europe on October 20 in London. After a Marquette update, current study abroad students paired up with alumni for one-on-one discussions. Flournoy felt that the event was a huge success. Alumni reconnected with Marquette, and the students gained a glimpse of life living and working in Europe.

Research volunteers needed

Dr. Eugenia Afinoguénova and her “Spanish Travelers”, an interdisciplinary student-faculty team, are in need of additional volunteers to facilitate their expanding Spanish Travelers Project. The team is currently developing a series of maps to visualize the routes and ideas of nineteenth-century travelers. Along with the map, they are developing a searchable database of what these authors wrote about their adventures.

Volunteers are needed to skim through at least one book and complete a questionnaire for the database. Volunteers who mine data in one book will receive a certificate and public recognition as a volunteer on the project website: www.spanishtravelers.com. Volunteers who mine data in five books or more will be recognized as a contributor to the database. To celebrate the project, all research volunteers will be invited to participate in a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spring/Summer of 2013. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK

International Education Week
November 14-18, 2011

A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, reminded the nation of the importance of international education:

“We must work together to give all of our students an outstanding education, which includes learning about our global partners – their cultures, histories, languages, values, and viewpoints. We must focus on integrating international perspectives into our classrooms. It is through education and exchange that we become better collaborators, competitors and compassionate neighbors in this global society.”

In celebration of International Education Week, the Office of International Education along with numerous faculty and staff partners has planned a number of lectures, panels, food tastings and internationally themed events. We hope you can join us.

Visit www.marquette.edu/oie/iweek for a complete schedule of events.
