A warm welcome to new International Students
From Austria to Zimbabwe, nearly 200 new international students arrived on campus to begin their studies at Marquette this fall. The 76 undergraduates make up the largest group of undergraduate international students in the past ten years. Students are from all fields of study with the largest cohort in the College of Business.
The Office of International Education brought all of the new international students together for three days of orientation to introduce students to campus and life at Marquette. The highlight of orientation is always the welcome picnic. This year the Marquette soccer team joined us after a delicious dinner to show off their moves. This global team features two international student players from Sweden and one from Ghana. The evening ended with a water balloon fight on the lawn. It was a successful orientation. Check out additional photos from the event on our Facebook page.

Defense Secretary Panetta promotes foreign language training
Leon Panetta, the new secretary of defense, has always been and still is a strong advocate of language training. He recently spoke to soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. He praised the group and explained, “We live in a global world. We have to understand that world if we…are going to be able to not only defend this country, but to extend our relationships to others so that we can work together to defend the world that we live in.” In a memo to senior Pentagon officials, he asked relevant military leaders to focus and engage in “cross-cultural training,” and new efforts to “increase and sustain the foreign language proficiency” of military professionals.

IMF Chief Lagarde's study abroad experience
According to a recent article in the Washington Post, Christine Lagarde, the newly appointed chief of the International Monetary Fund, spent one year (1973-74) as an American Field Service (AFS) French exchange student at a high school in Bethesda, MD. Lagarde had the opportunity to intern in Washington with then Representative and future Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen. “During that year at Holton-Arms with my host family and interning in Washington, I learned more, and it mattered more to me, probably, than any year of my life.” According to the school newspaper, Christine planned even then to embark on a career in politics as a cultural diplomat for France.
Lagarde arrived in the United States shortly after losing her own father. Bill Atkins, her host father “was a surrogate father in a way.” The two became close and their relationship has stood the test of time. Christine still consults with her host father whenever she has to make a tough decision.
