SUMMER 2012 STUDY ABROAD PROGRAMS
Marquette faculty-led summer programs are an ideal opportunity for students who wish to build on their global experiences. Faculty members develop courses that encourage students to deepen their knowledge about specific topics through guided academic work and hands-on experience abroad. Apply to 2012 summer, fall and academic year programs beginning December 19.
Unless noted, these programs have no language prerequisites and are open to students from outside of Marquette University. All dates are subject to change.
Ghana, Africa – Historical and Cultural Experience

Subjects Offered: History (3 credits)
Designed to help students better understand the complexities of the issues facing Ghana today, this three-credit program will expose students to many aspects of Ghanaian and West African cultures. The program includes visits to Kumasi, Ghana’s cultural capital and Elmina, the site of the first European slave-trading post in all of sub-Saharan Africa. Cochabamba, Bolivia - Language and Culture

Dates: June 13-July 22
Subjects Offered: Spanish (6-9 credits)
Join a Marquette Spanish faculty member in the “Garden City” of Bolivia at the Maryknoll Instituto de Idiomas to engage in intensive Spanish language study. This program is open to students studying Spanish from the beginner to advanced level. Students will be immersed in Bolivian culture through homestays, service opportunities, and excursions. Cuba – Cuba Today through the Lens of Theater
Faculty Leader: Dr. Raquel Aguilu de Murphy
Dates: late June to mid-July
Subjects Offered: Spanish (3 credits)
Join Marquette faculty member, Raquel Aguilu de Murphy, for a three-credit Spanish course examining Cuba today through the perspective of theater. The course will include an initial period of preparation on Marquette’s campus and two weeks in Cuba, followed by reflection back on Marquette’s campus. Pre-req: SPAN 3001. Beijing, China – China from Three Perspectives

Subjects Offered: Political Science/Philosophy/History (3 credits)
Going beyond the most commonly visited parts of China, this program offers students a rich and deep experience of China in three perspectives. Students will spend time in areas that represent Chinese life at all socioeconomic levels, thus experiencing the entire reality of China today. An interdisciplinary perspective facilitates learning about the structure of Chinese society, how Chinese communicate and express themselves and how Americans and Chinese can get along. Nicosia, Cyprus – Ancient Greek Drama in Cyprus: Theory into Practice

Dates: June 17-July 7
Subjects Offered: Theater (3 credits)
This program combines the study of ancient Greek drama and modern improvisational performance techniques in the setting of a politically divided country. Students have the opportunity to shadow professional theater rehearsal performances at ancient sites and meet with Cypriot and international theatre artists. Cagli, Italy – Digital Storytelling
Faculty Leader: Dr. William Thorn
Dates: May 21 – June 21
Subjects Offered: Communications (6 credits)
Students use classroom and lab experiences to explore the community of Cagli. Working in teams, students will transform their discoveries into stories through writing, photos, video, and a web page. Rabat and Fes, Morocco – Islamic Culture and the West
Faculty Leaders: Dr. Irfan Omar and Dr. Sarah Gendron
Dates: May 26 – June 16
Subjects Offered: Theology/Arabic (3 credits)
This program is designed to introduce students to the religion of Islam through an examination of the socioreligious and sociopolitical issues shaping today’s Muslim world. As a gateway to the Arab world, Morocco serves as an excellent site to study Islam’s interaction with the west while exploring historic cities and unique sites, including Fes, Marrakech and the desert. Piura, Peru – Community Nursing Program

Dates: June 1 – 29 and June 22 – July 20
Subjects Offered: Nursing (6 credits)
Nursing students have the opportunity to complete their community clinical experience abroad in Peru. Students participate in a wide range of clinical experiences, from primary health care to hospice care to alcohol/drug treatment groups. Madrid, Spain – Marquette Study Center in Madrid

Subjects Offered: Spanish (6 credits)
This program is the ideal introduction to Spain for anyone who wants to improve their Spanish. In addition to classroom learning at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a top Spanish university, students will participate in guided visits and excursions to sites around Madrid. London, UK and Barcelona, Spain - Advertising and PR
Faculty Leader: Dr. Jean Grow
Dates: May 21 – June 10
Subjects Offered: Advertising and PR (3 credits)
This three-week cultural immersion course is designed to bring culture and branding to life within the context of the global marketplace. Students will first spend time in London visiting advertising agencies and tracking brands in local culture.
