Peter Henriot, S.J. Spearheads Development for Secondary School in Malawi
In April, the Office of International Education welcomed Peter J. Henriot, S.J., an internationally respected Jesuit researcher, speaker and writer on social justice, globalization and Africa. At the forefront of Jesuit social action in Africa, Father Henriot, member of the Zambia-Malawi Province of the Society of Jesus, is currently serving as the director of development of a new Loyola Jesuit Secondary School for girls in Kasungu, Malawi. The school has begun phase one of the construction process and is scheduled to open in 2013. Father Henriot's explains in a recent article in THE TABLET, a London-based national Catholic weekly, “It is very obvious that there simply will be no development in a country like Malawi if the people don’t have a chance for good education. Education of the people is essential." He explains the critical need, the challenges and the potential of building a secondary school for girls in Malawi. Job/Internship Hunting: Why it Should Not Hinder Your Decision to Study Abroad
Have you ever considered studying abroad but found yourself torn between spending time looking for jobs rather than embarking on a once in a lifetime experience? There is one answer to this question and employers agree: go abroad!
CEO of Spark Hire, a video job board and online interviewing platform, says that it is definitely worth it to spend your time studying abroad. Most companies are willing to conduct video interviews, meaning that students can search for jobs in the U.S. even if they are studying abroad. Although interviewing face-to-face is the most effective way to make a first impression, videos are still an adequate way to interface because it still promotes the face-time aspect allowing the interviewer to see body language and professionalism. CEO of media training company Vettanna ToGo agrees, “The fundamentals of interviewing are the same. Poor body language and careless presentation can ruin a video interview as easily as they can derail a face-to-face conversation.”

U.S. Government Urges Study Abroad in China
While over 150,000 Chinese students enrolled for the 2010/11 school year in the U.S., only 15,000 U.S. students studied abroad in China. To encourage study abroad in China, the U.S. government set up a program called the 100,000 Strong Initiative trying to increase study abroad in China. The goal is to have 100,000 U.S. students study abroad in China over a four year period.
According to China Daily, more than $14 million has been donated to the initiative by a mix of Chinese and American companies to fund scholarships targeting undergraduates. Though students are not required to know the local language, the U.S. government strongly students to learn Mandarin because it allows students more business opportunities. Marquette offers eight unique programs in China. For more information on these programs, visit marquette.edu/abroad. Whether you want to learn Mandarin or just want to study abroad in China to broaden your horizons, check out 100,000 Strong and see if you qualify for a scholarship!

Impact an international community with ‘Engineers Without Borders’
Engineers Without Borders supports community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects. With over 250 chapters on more than 180 U.S. campuses, the Marquette University chapter offers its students to participate in international projects in Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. The goal of the program is to engage students and faculty to aim their skills and abilities to develop those of another culture for the purpose of improving standards of living, effectively empowering communities and developing socially and globally responsible engineers.
In 2007, EWB students completed a project in Santa Maria de Guadalupe Orphanage in Guatemala that replaced its original water system that was unreliable and unsafe to drink with a solar powered water pump dedicated to clear the water system. With the new filtration steps in place, students tested the water and that it was safe to drink. During a trip to Honduras in 2009, EWB students did a similar assessment and determined water unsafe for the community, which already suffered from limited to no access to running water. After measuring the flow rate at the source, students determined it was sufficient to provide water to the community. They began fixing a chlorination tank and renovating the system that serves the community today! If you are interested in taking part in helping a community or if you want to help through a donation, visit the EWB-Marquette website.
