Nursing abroad: Dublin program gives students a global perspective on health care
Two College of Nursing students spent their spring 2012 semester in Ireland immersed in the University College Dublin nursing program. Gretchen Smithy, a senior, explained, “I hope to apply what I’ve learned here to my studies in the United States, to compare the two and gain a more well-rounded view of health care.”

Crossing borders: Researcher explores toll of sudden deportation on health of Latina women
Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Ruth Ann Belknap spent a third summer along the U.S.-Mexico border working on research focused on the stressors experienced by Latina women coping with border crossings and sudden deportation. She hopes that her research will help health care practitioners better address the physical and mental toll these experiences demand. “It’s generally known that the more stressful events you have in your life, the worse health outcomes you have,” Belknap says.

Alumni Perspective: Top of the field
Dr. Shannon Perry, Nurs ’69 climbed Mount Kilimanjaro at age 73 to raise awareness and funds to combat human trafficking. Perry is a leader in nursing education and a strong believer in educating students to have a global perspective of health care. Visiting Scholar Profile

Dr. Alison Harmer

Visiting Scholar from Sydney, Australia

After studying physiotherapy in undergraduate studies and exercise physiology in her graduate studies, Alison Harmer’s passion for research in the field have brought her to the U.S.
Alison Harmer, Ph.D. is from Sydney, Australia. For the last eight years she has taught at the University of Sydney in the Physiotherapy School working on various exercise projects. She was granted a six month sabbatical leave and chose to come to Marquette to work with Sandra Hunter, associate professor of exercise science in the physical therapy department. “Two years ago when Dr. Hunter was visiting Australia, we met for a couple of bushwalks (hikes) and devised a research project for my sabbatical that suited both our main interests: muscle fatigue and diabetes,” said Harmer.

While at Marquette, Harmer and Hunter plan on collaborating with a number of faculty in the exercise science department as well as students who will help collect research data. They plan to investigate neuromuscular fatigue in people with and without Type 2 diabetes in hopes that their research establishes long-lasting collaborative links towards larger ongoing exercise research projects in the U.S. “I am immensely enjoying this rare opportunity to focus exclusively on research again,” Harmer said. “Virtually all my research strongly combines my interests in physiotherapy and exercise physiology.”

Besides researching, Harmer has enjoyed being in the U.S. with her husband.  “My husband was eligible for long-service leave from his secondary school, Knox Grammar, in Sydney,” she said. “We are enjoying exploring and living in a different environment, and we are particularly appreciative of the excellent bicycle paths, beautiful State and National Parks, and the great welcome we have received, especially at Marquette University.”
