Study Abroad Fair Wednesday, January 29

Study Abroad Fair PosterThe Office of International Education will host its biannual Study Abroad Fair Wednesday, January 29 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the second floor of AMU. Marquette's spring study abroad fair will highlight all summer study abroad options available to students including 2014 faculty-led programs in countries ranging from Argentina to Japan to South Africa. Students will have the opportunity to chat with advisors, program coordinators and study abroad alumni.

Additionally, OIE will host a series of program- and region-specific information sessions January 31-Feb. 10. More information is available on the OIE study abroad website and summer brochures are available at the Info Desk, OIE, and International Business Studies offices.

A warm welcome to new international students

a group of international students smilingOn Wednesday, Jan. 8 in the midst of the bitter cold weather, OIE welcomed new international students from around the world as they arrived to begin their study abroad experience at Marquette. From learning how to stay warm and healthy during the winter months to registering for classes to experiencing MU basketball, orientation was packed with information and introductions to Marquette culture. Chinese New Year celebration to be held at Marquette

Chinese New year photoChinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the first day of the year of the Chinese calendar. This year, the Chinese New Year begins on January 31 and celebrations will last for 15 days, ending with the beautiful Lantern Festival. 2014 is the year of the horse, which in Chinese culture is a symbol of nobility, class, speed and perseverance.

The Chinese Student and Scholars Association (CSSA) of Marquette is putting on a two-part event to celebrate the New Year. Wenyan Min, a member of CSSA, shared, "The event is designed to celebrate the Chinese New Year. As you see, more and more Chinese people are here at Marquette. This traditional Catholic university is becoming more and more international, facing all the cultural impacts and more open to the whole world. It is a good sign to have such a diversity and yet a great opportunity for Marquette to witness something that is happening here.”

The first portion of the event is a free performance in Varsity Theater, where students will demonstrate traditional dances, songs, wushu (martial arts) demonstrations, and several other activities associated with Chinese New Year. The dinner portion of the celebration will follow in the AMU Ballrooms as a chance for people to relax and enjoy the atmosphere as well as traditional Chinese cuisine served for the holiday. Tickets to the dinner can be purchased for $10 in the Brooks Lounge in AMU. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn about Chinese culture and celebrate the New Year!

Marquette explores partnerships in Vietnam

Vietnamese flagMarquette was selected as one of five U.S. universities to participate in the Institute of International Education’s (IIE) 2013-14 International Academic Partnership Program (IAPP) focusing on Vietnam. According to the IIE Open Doors report, Vietnam is the eighth leading place of origin for students studying in the United States. The IAPP is designed to help international education professionals develop strategies to implement and sustain partnerships with counterparts in Vietnam.


Terence Miller, director of the Office of International Education at Marquette, traveled to Vietnam this fall to participate in a series of training activities arranged by the program. Participants learned about the Vietnamese higher education system and institutional priorities for developing academic partnerships. The group traveled to three cities in Vietnam to meet potential partner campuses, U.S. Embassy officials, and representatives from Vietnamese education related organizations.

Each participating university left the program with the commitment to develop a strategic plan focused on building Vietnamese partnerships. Marquette's plan will focus on strategies to bring Vietnamese international students to Marquette as well as the development of partnership agreements enhancing student and faculty mobility. Marquette is looking forward to the future partnerships and increased international student diversity that will arise from participating in this great opportunity.

Marquette students present at the National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society Convention

Convention brochureThe National Collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society held their 34th National Biennial Convention of Alpha Mu Gamma at Elmhurst College this fall. Students, professors and professionals gathered for the two day event, which surrounded the theme of “Teaching World Languages in the 21st Century: Challenges and Innovations.” During the course of the convention there were 62 presentations within 15 different sessions. Each session pertained to a topic such as service learning, study abroad, and literary cultural studies, among others.

Two Marquette students, Jennifer Hilger and Andrew Schoeberle, along with Dr. Eugenia Alfinoguenova were chosen to present their paper on studying abroad in Spain. “The Blisters of Experiential Learning: Embodied Teaching and Studying along the Camino in Santiago,” was presented as a part of the study abroad sessions. The essay highlighted the student’s learning process and discussed the benefits of experiential learning. “The Camino de Santiago offered us an opportunity to learn experientially, encountering new classrooms every day and exposing us to language learning in ways that were off-kilter and disorienting, but also powerfully effective.” Whether good or challenging – hands-on experiences of true culture and language gave these students the most influential and realistic knowledge from their travels.

Enter the ELS sponsored United Nations essay contest

United Nations LogoEnter to win the ELS sponsored United Nations Academic Impact Student Essay Contest for the chance to win a full scholarship to attend the Global Youth Forum in New York, June 25-29, 2014, and present your essay at the UN headquarters. Students are invited to write an essay (2000 words or less) in their second language discussing the ideas of global citizenship and understanding and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these concepts. Entries must be in an official language of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) that is not the entrant’s first language or language of instruction in their primary or secondary education. Gilman International Scholarship Recipient

 

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Frances Fyten of Marquette University was one of the students selected to receive the prestigious scholarship. We met up with her and asked her a few questions about the award and her plans abroad.

 

Q: Where will you be studying abroad this semester?

A: When I began thinking about study abroad, I knew that I wanted to go somewhere French-speaking. I am a bit of a Francophile, so that was an absolute must for me. Basically, I could study in France, Canada, or Morocco, and my final decision came down to the Université Catholique in Lille, France or École de Gouvernance et d'Économie de Rabat (EGE Rabat). After a lot of research, thought and discussion with teachers, parents, friends, and the OIE staff (and I mean a lot…I went back and forth about 10 times), I finally chose EGE Rabat. My primary reasons are because I will be able to intensively study French, I want a very new and eye-opening experience, and I want to challenge myself. I think EGE Rabat will provide all of that for me.

 

Q:What kinds of classes do you plan on taking while abroad?

A: While at school, which starts the first week of February, I am planning on taking four courses in French: one macroeconomics course and three elective courses focusing on political science, media and humanities. In addition, I will be taking a beginners Arabic course, which will be insanely different, but hopefully fun!

 

Q: How did you hear about the Gilman Scholarship?

A: I first found it by just browsing the internet for study abroad scholarships. Once I returned to school, however, I discussed it with my study abroad advisor, Brock Price. The process as a whole has been relatively straight forward, but I have realized it takes some time and attention to detail.

 

Q:What is the application process like?

A: The online application process for the Spring 2014 scholarships began in mid-August (Gilman only opens the application for a certain period of time each year so be mindful of that) and was due November 1. The fall/academic year and summer scholarship applications are due March 4. Applicants must be Pell grant recipients.

 

To begin the online application, a student must first create an account at the Gilman website. Then students complete multiple sections focusing on personal, study abroad, financial, and institution information. I spent the largest portion of time completing the two required essays: a statement of purpose (or why are you interested in studying abroad and need the Gilman scholarship?) and a service proposal. As a Gilman recipient, I will need to complete a service project that promotes the Gilman Scholarship and more importantly my study abroad experience.

The Gilman website is full of helpful information and the program provides a lot of resources. During the application process, you can log into webinars and/or receive newsletters.

 

 Q: What are some words of advice you have for other students interested in applying?

A: I can say that applicants need to keep in touch with their Gilman advisor at OIE. It was quite helpful to have someone who has read previous applications and who knew the process, especially regarding the essays.

Also, it’s cliché, but applicants should start early when writing the essays, for time to brainstorm and proofread. Finally, for some reason ordering transcripts, was probably my biggest challenge. When ordering, keep a couple things in mind. Make sure you don’t have any sort of hold on your Bursar account. If you do, you cannot personally pick up the transcript. Also, if you need to send a transcript anywhere, don’t do so from the company. Just request for personal pick up at Zilber and mail it yourself. The transcript ordering company requires signed consent to send it out, and it is really complicated (Or at least I think it is).

 

Q: What will you be using your scholarship money for?

A: I will be using my scholarship ($3000!) to help with housing costs and for travel expenses.
