The Freshmen are Coming!

Released: Aug. 18, 2006

Marquette University will welcome the class of 2010 for move-in day on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Armed with their lava lamps, iPods and laptops, the freshmen will participate in New Student Orientation activities through Sunday, including organized activities on campus and throughout Milwaukee. Here are a few highlights:

Wednesday, Aug. 23

  • The great residence hall move-in will be in full swing from 8 a.m. until about 3 p.m. The best photo opportunity is usually at McCormick Hall on the corner of 16th and Wisconsin Ave. but students will also be moving in to Cobeen (729 N. 11th St.), O’Donnell (725 N. 18th St.) and Abbottsford (722 N. 11th St.) halls.
  • More than 1,500 students are expected to attend the return of the once infamous Orientation Block Party Wednesday, Aug. 23 from 9:45 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The new incarnation of an old favorite will include a D.J., simulated skydiving, a challenge course, pizza donated by Pizza Shuttle and soda courtesy of Pepsi. The block party will take place in Schroeder Field on Wells Street between 12th and 13th streets.

Thursday, Aug. 24

  • The traditional back to school Square Dance is Thursday, Aug. 24, from 9:45 p.m. to midnight in the central mall behind the Raynor Memorial Libraries (1355 Wisconsin Ave.). The Square Dance has been a popular Marquette orientation tradition for more than 25 years. More than 1,800 students and staff attend this event each year.

Sunday, Aug 27

  • The All-university Mass of the Holy Spirit brings together the entire campus community for the first time at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27, at Gesu Church (1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.).
