MILWAUKEE , WI – On Sunday, April
4, at 3:45 p.m. , Marquette students, Jesuits, faculty and staff
will gather for a procession of palms to recognize Palm Sunday.
This Holy Day in the Catholic Church marks the beginning of Holy
Week, which culminates on Easter Sunday. The procession will begin
at the large cross placed just outside of the St. Joan of Arc
Chapel, which is located on the interior of the campus behind
the new Raynor Library (off of Wisconsin Avenue ). Media parking
is available in the structure on 16 th street or on the street.
The procession will lead to Gesu Church , where
an all-university mass will take place at 4 p.m.
Palm branches have been used by all nations as an emblem of joy
and victory over enemies; in Christianity as a sign of victory
over the flesh and the world. The palms blessed on Palm Sunday
are used in the procession of the day, then taken home by the
faithful and used as a sacramental. From the blessed palms the
ashes are procured for Ash Wednesday.
