Marquette to Host Panel
Discussion on Social Justice

MILWAUKEE – Marquette University will host a panel discussion
addressing the issue of poverty in America on Saturday, October
9, 2004. The event aims to persuade young voters to use
their vote next month as the first step toward helping Americans
in need.
Jim Wallis, renowned for his nation-wide service as a pastor
and advocate of the poor, will lead the panel discussion, which
will be held Saturday from 4:00 – 6 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial
Union, Ballroom E. Wallis is leading the cross-country “Rolling
to Overcome Poverty” bus tour, sponsored by Call to Renewal, a
national network of churches based in Washington D.C. The
panel will also include Sherrie Tussler, Executive Director of
the Hunger Task Force, as well as representatives from the College
Republicans and Colleg e Democrats, both of which are Marquette
student organizations.
While Wallis and Tussler will focus on their experiences with
poverty and what they believe must be done politically and morally
to resolve it, the students will offer what they believe either
President Bush or Senator John Kerry may do to fight poverty if
elected to the presidency in November.
