German Honor Society
Prays for Peace
Released:
October 15, 2004
MILWAUKEE – During the month of October the Marquette University
German Honor Society, Delta Phi Alpha, will commemorate the fifteenth
anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall by offering Friedensgebete
(peace prayers) each Monday evening. These services are modeled
after those that took place at the church of St. Nicholas in Leipzig
in 1989, and which became a focal point for massive, peaceful
demonstrations.
The prayer services will be held at 9:00 p.m. on October 4, 11,
18, and 25 in the Chapel of the Holy Family, located on the second
floor of the Alumni Memorial Union at 1442 West Wisconsin Avenue
. They will be conducted primarily in English. All are welcome
to join in prayer and this commemoration of courageous faith.
Each of the services will recall ways in which the Berlin Wall
restricted the lives of Germans for more than forty years, and
will praise the courage of the East Germans who demonstrated for
fundamental freedoms and political reform in the face of secret
police and repression. They will also include prayers for solidarity
with the Christians of St. Nicholas and all who continue to endure
oppression.
Interested media should contact Anne Broeker in the Office
of Public Affairs at Marquette University.
