Marquette University will host the 6 th annual “Schroeder Sleep
Out” to raise community awareness of homelessness in Milwaukee.
Beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 until 7 a.m.
the following morning, students will sleep outside in boxes in
the area between the Walter Schroeder Residence Hall and the Alumni
Memorial Union. The event is sponsored by residence assistants
from Schroeder Hall.
A representative of Repairers of the Breach, an organization
dedicated to overcoming homelessness, will address the group at
7:30 p.m. on working toward social change in Milwaukee. Students
will collect blankets, food, and clothing to donate to an area
homeless shelter.
According to a recent study by the Milwaukee Continuum of Care
Homeless Coalition in early 2004, at least 21% of the homeless
in Milwaukee are employed and 62% are high school graduates. About
50% of the city's homeless are in need of mental health services,
and another 53% need drug and alcohol treatment.
