Al McGuire to be Remembered in One Man Play at Marquette
Dick Enberg's tribute presented by Marquette's
Department of Performing Arts
Released:
Dec. 22, 2004
Those who saw Al McGuire lead the 1977 Marquette basketball
team to the national championship knew him to be quite a character.
McGuire was a leader on and off the court, and the
people of Milwaukee adopted the Brooklyn native as one of
their own. Renowned sportscaster and multiple Emmy Award
winner Dick Enberg worked with McGuire after he left coaching,
during his tenure with CBS Sports. Enberg has written
a deeply moving tribute to this sports legend, and his play,
McGuire, allows us all to share in the memories of
his long time colleague and close friend.
This one-man play returns Al to center stage, where he loved
to be. The play revisits Al's inimitable wit and wisdom,
as we listen to him reminisce about his life from the streets
of Brooklyn to his days at Marquette and his travels as a
sportscaster with CBS. Enberg's play reminds us once
again why the philosophy of this one, uncommonly funny and
profound man, had such an important and lasting impact on
so many.
McGuire will be performed next June by film, television
and stage actor, Cotter Smith, who is also a founder and Artistic
Director of the Cornerstone Theatre Company, and will be directed
by his co-Artistic Director and wife, Heidi Mueller Smith.
