Marquette Names Communication Dean

Released: March 3, 2006

MILWAUKEE- Dr. John J. Pauly, professor of communication at St. Louis University, has been appointed dean of the Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University.

“I have confidence that Dr. John Pauly has the expertise, administrative experience, vision and energy to lead the college in accord with its faculty’s aspirations,” Provost Madeline Wake said. “We are indeed fortunate that he is joining our community.”

Pauly will be responsible for the academic and administrative leadership of the college, which will benefit in the coming years from a gift of $28 million from alumni J. William and Mary Diederich. The gift, announced in May, will assist in positioning the college as a national leader in scholarly research, creative work, outreach and teaching as it prepares students for communication in the 21st century.

“I am delighted that Marquette has invited me to become the new dean of its Diederich College of Communication,” Pauly said. “The Diederich gift has created a moment of exceptional opportunity for the students and faculty of the college, a chance to create a distinctive approach to media, communication, and theater education in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition. I am honored to be asked to join in such work.”

Pauly is a member of the editorial board of Journalism Theory, Practice and Criticism and was formerly a board member of Critical Studies in Mass Communication and Journalism Monographs. He also was a director of the American Journalism Historians Association and editor of its quarterly journal. Pauly also held several positions with the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Pauly has served as a writing skills consultant to private businesses, was a technical writer and editor for the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Champaign (IL), served as a press secretary for a mayoral candidate in Urbana (IL), and was a drama reviewer for the The Courier in Urbana.

Pauly succeeds Dr. Ana C. Garner, who has served as interim dean of the college for the 2005-06 academic year since the retirement of Dr. William R. Elliott.  He will join Marquette on July 1.
