Marquette Continues to Support Hurricane Katrina Victims

Released: Sept. 7, 2005

Marquette University has admitted approximately 95 displaced students from schools affected by Hurricane Katrina, including Loyola University New Orleans, Tulane University , Xavier University New Orleans and the University of New Orleans . With their arrival this week, Marquette will have reached its capacity to accept students.

All-university Prayer Service on Thursday: An all-university prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at Gesu Church . The service will serve as a vigil for those affected by the hurricane as well as a sign of support for the students arriving on campus from universities and colleges along the Gulf Coast .

Fund-raising Around Campus

Monetary Donations: Marquette has selected Catholic Charities U.S.A. and the American Red Cross as the university's officially designated charities for relief efforts on campus. Collection jars for Catholic Charities U.S.A. and the American Red Cross have been placed at residence hall desks, student-staffed tables in the AMU and University Ministry through Friday. The residence hall efforts and student-staffed tables were initiated by the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association.

The university has established a “Marquette Hurricane Relief Grant Fund" which will be administered through the Office of Mission and Identity. The fund joins Catholic Charities U.S.A. and the American Red Cross as the third designated focus of fund-raising efforts on campus. The fund is intended to provide small grants to assist with the personal expenses (food, clothing, textbooks, etc.) of incoming Gulf Coast students, some of whom are in serious financial need.

Libraries bake sale: The Library Support Staff Association and the Librarians' Assembly will hold a bake sale to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday near the flagpoles in front of the Raynor Memorial Libraries (or inside the Raynor Library lobby in the event of inclement weather). All money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross and Catholic Charities U.S.A.

Round up at the Marquette Spirit Shop: In conjunction with the Office of Student Development and other entities in the AMU, the Marquette Spirit Shop has begun “Rounding up for Hurricane Katrina Relief.” Customers have the option of rounding up their purchase total to a whole dollar amount or making another donation amount to benefit university-approved relief funds.

Intercollegiate Athletics efforts: Intercollegiate Athletics will be collecting donations for Catholic Charities U.S.A. and the American Red Cross at soccer and volleyball games, and observing a minute of silence at the beginning of games in remembrance of hurricane victims.
