McGuire To Return to Marquette Stage
One-man play about legendary basketball coach is back by popular demand

Released: Jan. 31, 2006

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University Department of Performing Art’s production of Dick Enberg’s McGuire, the one-man play about legendary Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire, will return to the Helfaer Theatre at Marquette in June 2006.  Distinguished actor Cotter Smith will reprise his role as McGuire.  The show originally debuted at Marquette in June 2005 to sell out performances.

The play was written by renowned sportscaster and multiple Emmy Award-winner Dick Enberg, a close friend of McGuire’s. Those who saw Al McGuire lead the 1977 Marquette basketball team to the national championship knew him to be quite a character.   McGuire was a leader on and off the court, and the people of Milwaukee adopted the Brooklyn native as one of their own.

The play revisits Al's inimitable wit and wisdom, as the audience listens to him reminisce about his life from the streets of Brooklyn to his days at Marquette and his travels as a sportscaster with CBS.  Enberg's deeply moving tribute reminds theatre goers once again why the philosophy of this one uncommonly funny and profound man, had such an important and lasting impact on so many.

Cotter Smith’s portrayal of McGuire won critical acclaim.  Damien Jacques of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wrote, “(Smith) becomes McGuire through a skillful re-creation of the character's speech rhythms and physicality. Add Enberg's fluid and engaging script, and there are moments when one would swear Al is in the room.”

Smith’s additional acting credits include films such as K-9, Blood Feud and X2: X-Men United as well as two network television dramatic series.  He is also the co-artistic director of the Cornerstone Theatre Company. Heidi Mueller-Smith, director and co-founder of the company, will again direct her husband in the production.
