Rethinking the End of Life After
Terri Schiavo
Released:
April 25, 2006
MILWAUKEE –An expert in moral theology and medicine, Dr.
M. Therese Lysaught, will present the 2006 Dr. Edward D. Simmons
Lecture on Society and Human Values at Marquette University
Tuesday, May 2, at 4 p.m. Laysaught will discuss Love
Your Enemies: Rethinking the End of Life After Terry Sciavo.
The event is free and open to the public and will be held
in the Weasler Auditorium, located at 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.
"Most analyses of the Terri Schiavo case focus on questions
of autonomy versus sanctity of life, or questions of artificial
nutrition in cases of persistent vegetative state,” says Lysaught.
“Such analyses, however, miss the larger picture. The Schiavo
case not only provides a focal point for examining how the
media shapes public perception of issues in bioethics, but
more importantly, it provides a moment for critical examination
of the shape of Christian action in the public square -- a
moment, in other words, for examining the shape of Christian
ethics.”
Lysaught is an associate professor of Religious Studies at
the University of Dayton . Having completed her doctoral
studies in theology and ethics at Duke University, her teaching
and academic work have been focused in the areas of moral
theology and theological reflection on science, biotechnology
and medicine. She also spent a year as an NIH/ELSI fellow
at the University of Iowa , working in a genetics lab; served
on the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee of the National
Institutes of Health, and currently works in a number of capacities
with the Catholic Health Association.
The Dr. Edward D. Simmons Lecture on Society and Human Values
