225 Pair of Basketball Shoes Donated to Marquette Youth Program
Students will receive shoes like those worn
by Dwayne Wade in 2005 NBA playoffs

Released: July 27, 2005

For the second consecutive year the Marquette University National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), which serves more than 700 children from Milwaukee's inner city, has received a donation of 225 pair of basketball shoes from Converse Inc. on behalf of Miami Heat superstar and Marquette basketball alum Dwyane Wade.

"The shoes that Dwyane Wade and Converse have generously donated mean the world to these kids,” said Matt McKinnon, assistant director of recreational sports and activity director for NYSP. "The reality is that most would not have gotten new shoes this summer.”

The Icon Pro Leatherbasketball shoes - which Dwyane Wade first debuted in the 2005 NBA playoffs -will be presented to 10-16 year old students as a reward for perfect attendance and good behavior throughout the six-week NYSP summer program. The children will receive the shoes in front of the Helfaer Rec Center at 525 N. 16 th St. from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28. Dwyane Wade's first signature shoe “WADE” will hit stores nation-wide November 3, 2005.

"It's especially admirable when someone like Dwyane Wade gives back to a worthwhile cause,” said McKinnon. “Dwyane is a true role model to these kids, not just because of his prowess on the court, but because of his genuine good character, which is demonstrated in his commitment to this program.”

The Marquette University National Youth Sports Program aims to expand opportunities for disadvantaged youth, to help them benefit from sports skill instruction, engage in sports competition and improve their physical fitness. Marquette's program was recently named the best NYSP program in the nation, beating out more than 200 programs for the honor. Sports in which NYSP youth participate include basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, bowling, martial arts and dance.
