Marquette University professional in residence awarded Nohl Fellowship
MILWAUKEE –– Danielle Beverly, a documentary filmmaker and professional in residence in Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communication, has won a $15,000 fellowship award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fund Fellowships for Individual Artists Competition.
“This is an exceptional honor for Danielle and strong recognition for the excellence of her work,” said Diederich College of Communication Dean Lori Bergen. “Our students benefit tremendously from working with faculty like Danielle, who excel as creative artists and then bring their expertise to the classroom.”
Beverly has been an independent artist for 15 years, shooting and directing her own films, including the documentary Old South, which follows a historically black Georgia neighborhood as it battles a Confederate flag-flying fraternity that moves in and stages an antebellum parade. Beverly has worked as a producer at PBS and ITVS, as a cameraperson on social issue documentaries such as Nohl Fellow Brad Lichtenstein’s As Goes Janesville and as a field producer for the Peabody Award-winning Rebirth.
Beverly was chosen in the Established Artist category and was one of seven recipients from nearly 150 applicants in the competition. The fellowship provides unrestricted funds for artists to create new work or complete work in progress. The program is open to practicing artists residing in the Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington counties. In addition to receiving an award, Nohl Fellows will participate in an exhibition at the Institute of Visual Arts in fall 2013.
