Marquette School of Dentistry to open northside clinic
The Marquette School of Dentistry will open a community clinic at 210 W. Capitol Dr. on Wednesday, Nov. 12. The clinic, located in the lower level of the Chase Bank building, will serve adolescents and adults five days a week.
Patients may begin making appointments at the clinic by calling 414-288-2930.
The Marquette University Community Dental Clinic - North has 10 dental chairs in its 5,000 square foot space. A full-time faculty member, Dr. Albert Abena, oversees the state-of-the-art clinic, assisted by part-time dental and dental hygiene faculty members. Marquette dental students, under faculty supervision, provide for the dental needs of area residents.
“We expect to serve more than 1,000 patients, annually,” said Dr. William Lobb, dean of the School of Dentistry. The clinic plans to expand services to include children in the future.
Marquette President Robert A. Wild praised the collaborative efforts of the dental school staff, other university departments, members of the Wisconsin State Legislature and the Governor’s Office in making the clinic a reality. He also acknowledged the support of several corporate supporters, including Delta Dental of Wisconsin, Henry Schein Dental, DCI International, and PaloDEx/ Instrumentarium.
MUSoD received $1 million from federal income augmentation funds made available through Wisconsin’s Department of Health and Family Services for the build-out of two clinics designed to provide dental care for low-income residents in Milwaukee. The Marquette University School of Dentistry Parkway Clinic opened at 2906 S. 20th St. a year ago.
In addition to the northside and southside locations, Marquette dental students and faculty treat patients at the on-campus clinic at 1801 W. Wisconsin Ave., as well as at satellite clinics throughout the state. Lobb said the School of Dentistry’s clinics serve nearly 20,000 patients annually with more than 80,000 patient visits. As one of the Wisconsin’s largest dental Medicaid providers, MUSoD provides care for more than 6,700 Medicaid patients each year.
“Marquette’s dental students and faculty are proud to continue our 25-year history of providing oral health care in Milwaukee and elsewhere in our state,” Lobb said. He said the site of the new northside clinic was specifically chosen to provide convenient access for patients. “The location along a major thoroughfare with public transportation and ample parking is important for our patients,” he said.
The Marquette School of Dentistry will sponsor an open house at the new clinic in early December.
