Urban schools advocate to speak on ‘Education in the Age of Obama’

A University of Chicago professor and author of several books on urban education will deliver the Tommy G. Thompson Educational Reform Lecture at Marquette University on Monday, March 2, at 4:30 p.m. in the Monaghan Ballroom, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Charles Payne, the Frank P. Hixon Professor in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago, studies urban education and school reform, social inequality, social change and modern African American history. He has authored several books, including So Much Reform, So Little Change and Teach Freedom: The African American Tradition of Education For Liberation.

Payne's topic at Marquette will be “Urban Education Reform in the Age of Obama: What Can We Expect? What Should We Hope For?”


Payne was founding director of the Urban Education Project in Orange, N.J. He has taught at Southern University, Williams College, Northwestern University and Duke University. Payne holds a bachelor’s degree in Afro-American studies from Syracuse University and a doctorate in sociology from Northwestern.


The Tommy G. Thompson lecture series is jointly sponsored by Marquette’s College of Education, the Office of the Provost and the Tommy G. Thompson Center at Marquette, which houses four decades of the former Wisconsin governor’s papers, including extensive documentation of Thompson’s role in the educational reform movement.
