Marquette University has announced Robert W. Turner as the 2009/2010 Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellow, a doctoral candidate completing his dissertation on the lives of NFL Players.
Established in 2002, the Mitchem Fellowship program assists under-represented ethnic groups in joining the professorate by giving doctoral candidates from other U.S. universities one academic year of support and the opportunity to teach an undergraduate course at Marquette while finishing their dissertations. They also participate in a formal mentoring program and receive financial support. Not counting the two 08/09 fellows, seven of the nine past Mitchem Fellows have already earned their Ph.D.’s and five have obtained tenure track positions at institutions including Marquette University.
The fellowships are named in honor of Dr. Arnold L. Mitchem, who earned his Ph.D. from Marquette in 1981 and is an internationally recognized advocate of educational opportunity. Mitchem founded Marquette’s Educational Opportunity Program in 1969 and is currently the president of the Council for Opportunity in Education, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization that works with colleges, universities and agencies to help low-income students enter and graduate from college. In May 2008, Mitchem was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees.
“The Mitchem Fellowship is helping create a stronger presence of culturally diverse faculty, an important factor in diversity in higher education. By supporting the fellows while they finish their dissertation and providing the critical teaching experience they will need as they enter the job market, the program helps get these individuals successfully complete their education and launch their faculty careers,” said Mitchem.
Turner is a doctoral candidate in sociology at the City University of New York working on his dissertation, “Fifteen Minutes of Fame: The Life and the Mind of the NFL Athlete.” Turner played professional football for four years in the late 1980s in the Unites States Football League, Canadian Football League and the National Football League. He has presented papers at the American Sociological Association and the Eastern Sociological Society.
“It is an honor to be a recipient of a Mitchem Fellowship and I am eager to arrive on campus,” said Turner. “Marquette’s National Law Institute provides a unique opportunity to further my research in understanding the social impact of sports on society that I could not get anywhere else.”
