Sports law and business conference hosted by Marquette Law School

The National Sports Law Institute of Marquette University Law School, in conjunction with its 20th anniversary, will host a conference entitled “The Evolution of Sports Law and Business from the 20th to the 21st Century,” Friday, Oct. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave. The conference will bring together experts who will discuss significant legal and business developments in the sports industry since the founding of the NSLI in 1989 and will predict what may happen during the next five years.

The conference will include five distinct panel discussions: Olympic/international, professional, college and high school sports, and common legal issues affecting all levels of sports, such as gender equity and officiating. Sports faculty and professionals from across the country will moderate each of the sessions. A complete schedule is available online.

Marquette Athletic Director Steve Cottingham will moderate the collegiate sports panel, which will include Elsa Kircher Cole, vice president of legal affairs and general counsel for the NCAA, C. Peter Goplerud, dean and professor of law at Florida Coastal School of Law, Kathryn Statz, associate athletic director at DePaul University and Shawn Eichorst, executive associate athletic director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Panelists will discuss legal developments affecting the NCAA over the past 20 years.

Conference registration will take place starting at 7:30 a.m., and a reception will immediately follow the conference, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Registration information and further details are available online
