Marquette offers spring break engineering courses for young students

Event Information
Date: April 5-9
Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Place: Patrick E. Haggerty Hall, Room 499
           1515 W. Wisconsin Ave. Contact

Marquette’s College of Engineering Outreach Program is offering three engineering programs during spring break, which for most elementary, middle and high school students in the Milwaukee area is April 5-9. During the week-long programs students can design their own robots and girls can learn about the exciting opportunities offered by engineering. Classes are $150 and limited to 15 students, which are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The spring break programs are:

Super SUMO-bot Competition, RCX
Ages 8-16
April 5-9, 9 a.m. - noon
Students will design, build and program robots to compete in a Sumo wrestling-style competition using the LEGO Mindstorms RCX system. There will be two divisions in the context, one for beginners and one for students with experience using RCX. Prizes will be awarded for the best bots.

Engineering… It’s a Girls’ Thing
Ages 6-11
April 5-9, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Girls of similar age will be teamed together to work cooperatively to experience the fun and excitement of engineering problem-solving skills, and how engineers can make the world a better place to live. Students will learn how science and engineering are used to protect people in car crashes, and they will build air-powered rockets, an electric circuit and a LEGO robot.

Engineering for Young Women
Ages 12-18
April 5-9, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Young women will work together to experience the fun, challenge and excitement of engineering. Through hands-on activities, participants will learn how engineers work to solve problems, including the development of renewable energy resources and safer cars. The program will present engineering as the new “helping profession,” improving our quality of life, and as a great career opportunity.

The mission of the Engineering Outreach Program at Marquette University is to enhance the STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) skills of children and adults in the Milwaukee region to better prepare them for the challenges of competing in a global economy driven by innovation.
