Marquette University and Wisconsin Department of Transportation announce MU license plate

MILWAUKEE – Beginning today, a special Marquette University license plate will be available to Wisconsin drivers, the university and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The license plate features the MU monogram on the left side of the plate and the words “Marquette University” at the bottom. Friends of the university will also have the option of personalizing their plates.

“Marquette alumni have asked about the special license plates for several years,” said Meg Husband, associate vice president for engagement and external relations. “We’re delighted to have another way for our alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends of the university to show their Marquette pride.” State Sen. Jeff Plale and State Rep. Pedro Colon introduced legislation allowing DOT to issue the special license plates, and Gov. Jim Doyle signed the bill into law on March 15. More than 1,000 persons have signed up to receive notice of the availability of the special plates.

Husband said, unlike most special plates, this is not a fundraiser for the university. Marquette paid the up-front production costs. Those ordering non-personalized Marquette plates will pay a $15 fee when plates are issued or re-issued, which happens about every 10 years, in addition to the normal registration fee. For personalized plates, a $15 annual fee is required, in addition to the normal registration fee. Marquette personalized plates can have one to six characters. Marquette license plates can be purchased at any time, regardless of an individual driver’s assigned renewal month.
