New cadets to give oath, alumnus to be honored for serviceEvent Information

Marquette University Army ROTC will contract 18 new cadets and recognize an alumnus for his service in the armed forces at an 8:30 a.m. ceremony on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, in the Marquette Gymnasium, 1508 W. Clybourn Street.
New cadets will affirm their intentions to become officers in the United States Army by reciting the Army Cadet Oath. This year’s class includes 14 Marquette students, along with two students from UW-Milwaukee and one student each from Concordia University Wisconsin and Carroll University.
The Marquette Army ROTC will also induct Col. Mark E. Mitchell as a member of the battalion’s Wall of Honor. A decorated Army Infantry and Special Forces combat veteran, he is the first living recipient since the Vietnam War to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second most prestigious military award. The honor recognizes his courage under fire, decisive leadership and personal sacrifice during a rescue operation in the first months of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He currently works in the Pentagon as the Senior Military Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations.
Mitchell graduated from Marquette in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. He went on to earn a master’s degree in defense analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School and also graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
