Arab and Muslim Americans

Assistant professor of sociology
Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Louise Cainkar is the author of Homeland Insecurity: The Arab American and Muslim American Experience after 9/11. Her book is the result of nearly seven years of research, which included collecting interviewing and collecting oral histories from more than 100 Arab and Muslim Americans in Chicago’s suburbs. Cainkar’s book documents the harassment and scrutiny Arab and Muslim Americans faced after 9/11, as well as the resiliency of Arab and Muslim Americans whose civic involvement and religiosity increased after 9/11, in order to thoughtfully respond to the questions and criticisms they were faced with.
