Rev. Kevin T. FitzGerald, S.J., Ph.D., will deliver the annual Dr. Edward D. Simmons Lecture at Marquette University at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Tony and Lucille Weasler Auditorium. Titled “Human Cloning and Stem Cell Research: Prometheus or Pandora?,” this free, public lecture will explore how biomedical research raises philosophical and theological issues regarding human nature, health and the human good.
Father FitzGerald holds the Dr. David Lauler Chair in Catholic Health Care Ethics and is a research associate professor in the Georgetown University Medical Center’s Department of Oncology. His research efforts focus on the investigation of abnormal gene regulation in cancer and on ethical issues in human genetics.
Often interviewed by the news media on topics such as human genetic engineering, cloning, stem cell research and the Human Genome Project, Father FitzGerald in 2004 was named to the external Biotechnology Advisory Panel of the DuPont Corporation.
About the Simmons Lecture
The Dr. Edward D. Simmons Lecture on Society and Human Values aims to further the study of morality and ethics at Marquette University. The lecture honors Dr. Edward D. Simmons, a highly respected professor of philosophy and vice president for academic affairs. Simmons joined the Department of Philosophy in 1952 and was vice president for academic affairs from 1973 until his sudden death in 1987. The Simmons Lecture is sponsored by the Center for Ethics Studies and the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences through the generosity of Keith G. Myers, who earned his bachelor's degree in 1962 and master's degree in 1968 from the College of Business Administration.
