Marquette Graduate Programs earn national recognition

in 2008 U.S. News and World Report rankings

Released: March 30, 2007

The dispute resolution program at Marquette University Law School is listed at sixth nationally in the latest Graduate School rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. The Law School itself is in the “Top 100” of law schools nationwide, and its legal writing program is ranked 26th.

“It is true that rankings are seen by some as a measure of quality, and it’s certainly nice to be recognized. But of equal or more importance are the services and opportunities for public discourse we provide to the community, the foundation for excellence we foster in our students and the contributions to the body of legal knowledge made by our faculty,” Law School Dean Joseph D. Kearney said. “Dispute resolution is just one example of the Marquette University Law School programs that address those needs.”

The dispute resolution program includes instruction and practice in negotiation, mediation and arbitration. Students refine their listening skills, learn reframing techniques, simulate negotiation meetings and reflect on their experiences under the direction of three full-time faculty members with national reputations: former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske, Jay Grenig and Andrea Schneider. “Dispute resolution has become an important skill in today’s legal environment and has evolved into a specialty area in law,” Kearney said.

The 2008 rankings also list Marquette at 17th for part-time MBA programs. The program in Marquette’s Graduate School of Management is geared toward working professionals, with flexible scheduling, a rigorous curriculum and small class sizes. “This is another indication of the national recognition our business programs are receiving,” David Shrock, dean of the Graduate School of Management and the College of Business Administration, said, noting that BusinessWeek recently again named Marquette among its top 50 undergraduate business programs.

Marquette’s nurse-midwifery program ranked 18th nationally, and the College of Nursing was #54, placing it among the top 15 percent of the nearly 400 schools listed. Other Marquette programs receiving national rankings included biomedical engineering, listed at 37th, and the physician assistant program in the College of Health Sciences at 40th.

Highlights of the graduate school rankings were reported in the April 9 edition of U.S. News & World Report. Not all disciplines are ranked annually.  For more information, visit www.usnews.com.
